My Vista is activated but "not genuine" RRS feed

  • Question

  • Please help -

My copy of Windows Vista IS legitimate but today when I booted Windows claimed it was "not genuine".

I already did reactivation online and it was successful - however this does not seem to affect Vista thinking it is not genuine.

Some messageboards are saying this is a problem with some NVIDIA motherboard drivers???

Anyway I would really like to get my PC back to full functionality.  I tried reinstalling all NVIDIA drivers (using WHQL versions) but that did not seem to help (other people seemed to solve their problem with this.

    Thank you

  • If your System Properties window is showing that you're activated and online validation says you're not, please:

    1. Phone activate and speak with a support agent when you’re given the option.  You can start by typing "slui.exe 4" in the search field in the Start Menu and pressing Enter. Follow the prompts through phone activation (be ready for lots of numbers) and then reboot.  The phone activation process takes about 6 minutes.

    2. Once you're done, please revalidate by clicking on "Validate Windows" here: www.microsoft.com/genuine

After you've validated successfully you can log out and log back in or reboot to get rid of any non-genuine messaging you may be getting.

If you’ve tried phone activation and you're still reaching the same validation failure page (with error code 0xC004C4A6), please open a free service request by visiting: https://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?c1=509&gprid=9860 and post your confirmation number here.  I'll contact you directly so we can figure out the cause of your issue.

If you're not in the US, please also post the name of the support agent who contacts you by e-mail once you've made the free service request.

     Thank you!

  • Hi

Have got exactly the same problem on my Dad's machine - had new PC from Acer with Vista pre-installed, been fine for a couple of months and now Vista is suddenly not a genuine copy!

  • I'm thinkin that this is an OEM version error.  I built my computer and bought myself the OEM Vista version.  Does everyone here have OEM or Retail?    If you bought the computer with Vista preloaded, 99.9% you have OEM.

I bought my Retail version at Wal-Mart about 2 months ago...  I have been using it with no problems until today, the genuine activation says I need to validate and my windows says I am validated.

  • Not an OEM thing.  Issue with certain drivers that mess with the Volume ID on hard drives.

I can tell you all how I had to fix it:

Open a command prompt with admin priviledges.

    Run "slui 4"

Go through the telephone activation process.  It will fail.  They will connect you with a person.

The person will take you through activation.  This will NOT (yet) fix the "Genuine" problem.    When the activation is done...

    Go to www.microsoft.com

Download something (anything) that requires validation.  I downloaded the DirectX redistributable.  It will succeed.

    Reboot.

Vista will be back to it's (relative) normal state.

What a pain in the *ss.  Thanks Microsoft for inconveniencing legitimate customers while not really stopping piracy...
