Share size? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Ok,

I have the WHS trial running on a P4 to make sure it does what I need it to before I buy the full license.  The problem I'm having is that the share size is reported as 91.7GB total which was right when I first installed WHS (120GB IDE drive).  Since then I have added a 500GB SATA drive and if I buy WHS I will also add a 1TB drive.  When I added the 500GB drive I chose to add it to the storage pool.  For some reason, WHS doesn't actually perform this operation, but it looks like it does from the WHS console (not in remote desktop w/ My Computer open though).  Anyone have a clue why?  I know my SATA controller is seen as a RAID device, but I cannot create a RAID array (JBOD) on it so I would think it would work fine.  I can add it as a seperate drive letter just fine, but that kind of defeats the purpose of using WHS.

It's working as expected.  You will not see the added drive from the server desktop (which, fyi, logging into is unsupported) under My Computer when you add a drive to the storage pool.

  • One small addition to the answer of kariya21: If you want to browse the storage pool drives in windows explorer have a look at the folder C:\fs on your WHS. This is where drives added to the storage pool will show up. Please do NOT make any changes here, and do NOT copy files to this location! This could potentially break your WHS install.

So I won't see the extra space on the shared folder either?

The extra space is behind the scenes, so it's still there.  However, if you mean seeing the free space from something like a mapped drive, no.  All you will see is the free space on the primary drive (the one where the OS is installed).

Come to find out that the system I'm using doesn't support booting off an external controller (stupid free computers) so I have to install to the 120GB drive I have (unless I buy a 500GB EIDE too) and although I don't anticipate needing to copy more than ~80GB in one file you never know........

I do know that when I pull data off my current NAS I will have more than 80GB in most folders and I hate having to copy a couple files at a time (the lazy part of me comes out again).

Ok, I was hoping I would see it on the mapped drive as well.  But even over a 100mbps network its still about twice as fast as my current NAS over gigabit.  And newegg.com has WHS w/ PP1 on sale for $99.00 and free shipping right now so I'm going to order it along with a $6.99 gigabit NIC they also have on sale ;)
