I can't re-activate Windows XP due to non-genuineness? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I tried to re-activate XP on my PC and even though the automated machine recognized the numbers by giving me a ding after every group, it said that my copy of Win. isn't genuine.  How can this be, and how might I  re-activate XP or, at least, recover my files on the HDD?

  • Hello Luis,

I assume that when you say "the automated machine recognized the numbers" this means you are doing an Activation by Phone.  In this case, call again, but this time do not enter anything into the phone, this should force the Automatic Phone Prompt to transfer you to a Live Activation Rep.  He/she should be able to help you from there.

  • Hello Luis A Pina III,

In order to receive the best support, we request all users initially download and run the Genuine Diagnostics tool at this link http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012. Click "Run" several times to download and start the Utility.  When asked, click the "Continue" button.  When the utility completes its run, click the "Copy" button, then come back here and paste the report into your post.

Also, please look on the computer for a Certificate of Authenticity (CoA).  If there is a CoA, please tell us what version and edition of Windows is listed on the CoA, and if there is a manufacturer's name or "OEM Software" or "OEM Product" printed on the CoA.  Do not post the product key printed on the CoA.
