  • Question

  • When you select Unanswered Threads in the filtering option, you also get Proposed Answers too. Obviously this filtering is a bug.

  • No, this is by design. Proposed is still an 'unanswered' state. Thanks for reporting this, we'll look into changing how some of this works in the future in a more broad context.

  • We could certainly change the filter to not include proposed, since people can filter by that specifically. The question is around whether the convenience of having the current unans filter including both unans and unans+proposed is offset by the immense confusion of including the proposed answers. I don't think it is, at least that's my current opinion.

  • If this changes it'll be unanswered only, there's already another option for proposed.  The filter bar needs to be rethought and I'm not going to overcomplicate the ux for the time being unless I really need to.

IMO how do you expect someone to look and reply to only Unanswered post???  Most users will NEVER mark a post as Answered and therefore the post will sit there forever as Unanswered. This does not make it easy for those of us that are trying to find and post answers.

  • The filter is valuable for moderators, who want to review threads that have not yet been marked as answered. Often replies marked as Proposed Answers can be marked as the Answer, if the original poster hasn't replied in awhile.

    Exactly my point.

I’m not saying get rid of the filters. On the contrary, I’m saying that the Unanswered filter should only include Unanswered post. Heck I don’t care if they add another filter that show both Unanswered and Proposed Answers. But if you look at the existing filtering, the unanswered filter is the only one that shows more than one type of post. This clearly does not make sense and it makes it hard to those that would like to ensure that all posts are Answered or at least proposed as there is no way to find only unanswered posts.

    Take this forum

    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/configmgrinventory/threads?filter=alltypes

If I filter on Proposed, I have 132 posts

    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/configmgrinventory/threads?filter=proposed

Now if I filter on unanswered I get 178 posts.

    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/configmgrinventory/threads?filter=unanswered

You would think that there is a lot of unanswered post but in fact there are on 46 unanswered post. To find them you need to weed thru 132 other posts to find them.

Thus proving my point that the unanswered filter, as it works today, is not all that helpful.

  • I think you missed my point. I want to filter on any threads not marked as answered. The "unanswered" filter gives me both. It includes threads with no mark and threads only marked with proposed answers. In both cases, the issue has not yet been resolved, and the thread is considered "open".

However, if "unanswered" were changed to only include unmarked threads (the 46 in your example), I could filter twice, first consider threads with proposed answers, then consider threads with no marks.

  • It is unclear to me, are you ok with two filter options (Unanswered       and Unanswered & Proposed) or just one?

  • I would prefer one filter that includes all unresolved threads (as it works now), because it makes my job as moderator easier.

  • We will agree to disagree.. IMO the way it works now it missleading and not helpfull for people trying to answer post.

  • To satisfy both you can add an extra filter on Unanswered (without proposed answers). Current Unanswered filter will remain the same, but if someone wants to only look into unanswered without anyone proposing an answer, this filter will also be available.

Sometimes answers are not what someone wants them to be. This still seems like the most direct answer to the original question. Good thoughts presented here though.
