Invalid Product Key after installing SP3 for Office Professional Edition 2003 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Dear WGA,

I purchased 2 boxed Office Professional Edition 2003 packages through the mail directly from Microsoft using my employee discount from CSC back in 2003. I have confirmed that they are both genuine by using your website's examples. I recently upgraded both my computers to SP3 for Office 2003. One computer is running XP Pro and the other is running Vista Home Premium. The Xp computer now gets "Invalid Product Key" 0x80180114 when running the GOA office validation tool. The Vista computer reports "Genuine"

I ran the diag on the XP computer and got this report:

I assume blocked "114 VLK 2" refers to a blocked volume license, but these are not volume licensed products. Office works normally and has had automatic updates performed since it was installed back in 2003. I thinking I'm the victim of somebody's typo. As I have not  worked for CSC for 2 years now, How do I get this corrected?

  • DisneySpirit,

We are sorry to hear about the problem your currently experiencing. I can see right away what the issue is and why you are not passing validation.  Unfortunately, the product key used to install the Office Professional 2003  is a Volume License Key (VLK) that has been blocked per the request of the legal VLK holder.  As a rule, VLK editions Office should not be sold to individual consumers. Businesses, schools and governments normally use VLK editions for flexibility in installing many computers. Also, Volume Licenses MS Office are Upgrade licenses ONLY and cannot be used as the original or base license for a new computer.

Also please review the Validation Advisor for further guidance at:

First, if this comes as a total surprise to you, please visit the retailer where you purchased the software and let them know the software is a counterfeit copy.  Please print a copy of the diagnostic report so you may show them proof for the VLK status. Request they immediately reimburse you and/or provide a Genuine Copy.

(This product key is Microsoft's corporate key and has therefore been blocked from use. If this key is being used, you will need to contact your internal IT department to obtain the correct product key assigned to their corporation.)

Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) is here to help protect YOU, our valued customer. It is important for more people like you to report piracy @ http://www.microsoft.com/piracy/default.mspx  who have become victims. Microsoft legal will follow up on all leads provided.  Submitting piracy reports will assist in stopping unscrupulous business practices.  We CANNOT determine the "Quality" level of non-Genuine submissions and cannot guarantee such a thing here on the forum.

You may be eligible for free software if you have high quality counterfeit discs as illustrated here:

Again, we are sorry to hear about your situation. Please be sure to backup or otherwise offload any data from the hard disk because a clean installation/reimaging will destroy all personal user data on the hard drive. Please don't hesitate re-posting if you need further assistance.

  • Lori MS,

Thank you for the quick reply.

I still have the original boxes and CDs that I purchased through a program offered by my then employer, CSC (Computer Sciences Corporation) which were shipped directly to me from Microsoft. They are not upgrades, but the full install packages. As I am not employeed by CSC anymore, I now have no access to the employee purchase program portal or CSC contacts for any reimbursement. Hence, I cannot visit the retailer where I purchased the software.

Looking at the COA on the boxes I have sequential numbers 99994-510-622-047 and 99994-510-622-048.

The first number is installed on my Windows Vista system and validates fine. The second number is installed on my XP Pro system and gets the Invalid Product Key. Since they were bought from the same source at the same time, and are sequential, why wouldn't they both pass or fail? It makes no sense. They should either both be pirated or counterfeit discs or genuine. Also, It was installing all updates and add ons as genuine prior to the SP3 Office 2003 update. Is there anyone I can call and give them the 25 digit Alpha Numeric Product Keys from my discs cases for them to check and see if posibly the derived key created when I registered are correct? BTW, Office 2003 is still working fine, I just can't install any new add ons.
