The speed won't change whether you use IE or VPN. You are limited by A) the upload speed of your ISP at home and B) the download speed of the location where you're at (usually the former because typical home ISP upload speeds are much lower than download speeds).

Setting up WHS as a VPN server is unsupported. However, if you really want to do it anyway, try following the guide here (it's for XP, but the setup is the same). NOTE: It is somewhat advanced and if you aren't familiar with networking, I would strongly advise against it.- Proposed as answer by kariya21Moderator Sunday, April 12, 2009 5:32 PM

I tried to set it up and was not very successful. I ended up using Hamachi and it was a breeze. It is free if used for personal use. I have a password program on my server and can access it much easier thru the vpn. I set it up on the server while out of town.

Good luck.

I use SSH with WinSSHD (http://www.bitvise.com/winsshd) as SSH server and Tunnelier (http://www.bitvise.com/tunnelier) as SSH client. Tunnelier even has a quick launch button from tunneling remote desktop. Also built in is SFTP for secure access to all files. Easy, secure and fast access to both the server and all files.
Was quick and easy to install, but unsupported since you actuall need to RPD into the server to install.
