ActiveX Error: 0x80080296 during validation

Question
-
I'm trying to download he newest version of directx, but I cant get through he validation process. I've tried several times and I get an error message saying "activex is not properly configured to run the validation tool. I ran a diagnostics using the tool provided and it says activex fails. I then downloaded the "legitcheck" program and get this error: "Validation Not Completed: ActiveX Error" 0x80080296.
Any ideas?

I'm a Microsoft Sr. Tech Support Executive. So, you can take my word and try this first.
WGA Error Code: 0x80080296 (Error Message: Validation not completed : ActiveX Error )
******************************************************************Cause: Conflict between DNS Address of ISP especially Comcast and IP Address of Microsoft.
Resolution: Set Global IP Address for DNS Server manually.
Control Panel - Network Connection - Local Area Connection (Properties) - TCP/IP Properties
Set IP Address for "Preffered DNS Server" as 4.2.2.2 and for "Alternate DNS Server" as 4.2.2.3If the issue persists, try new user account.

Phil,
If you find it appropriate to include suggestions for alternate DNS servers in the sticky you are drafting, I can recommend http://www.opendns.com/

I ran the legitcheck and got the same error code as you. I received an email from a Microsoft engineer and relayed the error code to her among other validation problems. She also confirmed that my product key is valid. If I get a reply with a solution and it works I will post it.Friday, November 10, 2006 12:16 AM

I've gotten an answer from Microsoft but I ended up sending another email to them requesting clarification and have not received a response yet. Also in addition to the problem that you have I also have a problem accessing specific Microsoft websites which Microsoft refers to in this response. So here is what I have received so far. "Based on this behavior, I infer that the validation issue 0x80080296 is related to the connection issue with Microsoft websites." "According to my research, this issue can be related to the network device you are using or your ISP." "It is possible that the MTU on the local system or the router is too large." "At this time I suggest we perform the folling steps first" :
"MTU is the maximum packet size (in bytes) that can be transported reliably across any particular network, specifically an IP Ethernet network." "The maximum size of an IP Ethernet packet is 1500, but several variables usually require a smaller packet size." "For instance the largest MTU possible for PPPoE connectivity is 1492 due to an 8 byte PPPoE header." "It is very important to set the correct MTU." "An MTU that is too large will require fragmenting a single packet into two separate packets"; "an MTU that is too small loses transmission efficiency." "To find your optimum MTU setting please reference this MTU FAQ."
"This is due to a mismatch in Maximum Transfer Unit (MTU)."
"The default and maximum PPPoE MTU size is 1,480 bytes." "With some Internet service providers (ISP's), you may need to reduce the MTU size of a PPPoE connection to a value of between 1,400 and 1,480."
From here on in it goes on to explain the specifics which requires a registry entry. That is where I required clarification because the correct MTU size for me is 1470 but when I followed the instructions and attempted to make the registry entry it entered a default value of 0x00000000 (0) which I then had to change. I clicked on modify, I believe, and had to choose between decimal or hexadecimal and chose decimal. I then entered 1470 which it changed to 5232. When I clicked on ok it entered 0x00001470 (5232) so I deleted the line and closed the registry. I then sent an email to make sure I entered the value correctly before modifying the registry.
Besides what I have just typed there is another whole page of instructions but I guess it is all a mute point if it doesn't work. I'm not an IT Professional an I wouldn't want to lead you down the garden path only to have you mess up your registry. So I'd rather wait for a responce from them before passing it on to you because in the instructions it didn't say anything about a default value or having to modify it or how to modify it. I just hacked around and discoverd the modify feature.

Just thought you would like to know I did get an answer from Microsoft and went into the registry and was able to enter a New DWord Value. This had to do with changing the maximum packet size (in bytes) that can be transported reliably across any particular network.
I rebooted the computer and everything seemed to work fine. But when I tried to run the validation check it did not complete. So I ran the alternative method and received the following return, "Validation not completed ActiveX error 0x80080296. So apparently it didn't fix the problem. So I sent off another email to Microsoft and am waiting for a response.
Just out of curiosity Vashek, do you use a registry cleaner? I have a gut feeling that mine might of deleted something which is causing the problem. I recently had a problem downloading two critical updates which were for Microsoft Office. I kept getting a message that the download was unsuccessful. So I deleted Office 2003 and reloaded it and tried to download the updates again. This time the download was successful.

This post will be stickied shortly. I'll be trying to track down the core cause of this DNS conflict and update when possible. Thanks!

Vashek,
I said I would get back to you as soon as Microsoft resolved the issue for me but I seen in one of the posts from Microsoft below that the issue has already been resolved. I also was instructed to Set the IP Address for "Prefered DNS Server" as 4.2.2.2 and for "Alternate DNS Server" as 4.2.2.3 and it worked. Hopefully it will work for you as well.
