what is the BackgroundTranscoder.exe task? RRS feed

  • Hi everyone,  the BackgroundTranscoder.exe has been running for days, and taking most of the CPU, when i look at the CPU its at 100% all the time.  does anyone know what is BackgroundTranscoder.exe

    it takes me about 15 minutes to get into the console app.

     i have the EX485 with 2 x 1tb drives

  • Can you find out where that program is on your server's hard drive? Usually that will give you a good hint as to what it is. :)

    That said, I would guess it's additional software installed by HP.


    I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)

  • thank you for the suggestion.

     BackgroundTranscoder.exe lives in c:\program files\windows home server\

    its copyright is HP, i posted the same question on the http://www.mediasmarthome.com/forum and i guess no one at HP monitors that forum or they dont know what it is.

    its been runnig for days now taking 60-90% of the CPU and slowing down everything else.

  • I don't have an HP, but my guess is that it is a media transcoder ... ala it is used for HP's media streaming. You could try to disable that streaming function

  • sounds reasonable that its a media streaming task, but i dont stream any media.

  • If you have media on your server, it may be busy indexing it. As Evaders99 suggested, turn off streaming (both Microsoft's and HP's) if you're not using it.

  • well the server is back to normal, but i dont know why.  i did not put any new media on it, and i had streaming turned off.
