Could CRM automate this entire process?

Question

Hi all,
I have only just been exposed to CRM so please accept my apologies if this question seems ridiculous - I am at the bottom of a learning curve but want to learn, and you guys seem the best people to learn from :-)
Take a customer magazine subscription model in CRM. The particular procedure I'm interested in is as follows: currently, when a subscription is due to expire, the relevant salesperson is manually emailed the fact :-( They then manually contact the agency in that area by letter to advise them and the agency does the rest regarding the renewal (or not as the case may be). I think the letter is a mail-merge job.
From what little I've seen of CRM, this entire process could be triggered and entirely automated? Surely?
Thank you in advance for reading, I really appreciate it.

One approach would be to create a new entity named Subscription. Then you would use workflow to trigger when a subscription renewal date is reached, the workflow will email the salesperson and then they can create an email activity.
Workflow example of being triggered on Case followup by but can be altered to be based on your own entity and expiry date field. http://www.askcrm.com/Default.aspx?tabid=866&EntryID=55

Definitely, you can automate this process in ms crm using MS CRM workflow, you can configure your workflow to run on specific condition based on some criteria
Below are some examples which will help you

Hi,
I do not think that the mailmerge part could be automated as such. You could set up a email reminder or task or activity to do the mailmerge with the relevant contact details included. But getting the merge to run itself is possible only with a lot of expensive customisation I would think.
I be interesed to know if anyone has gone down the path of "automatic" fulfullment (maybe to a third party mailhouse) and any leanring from the experience?
