Issues with installation of PP2 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Just been looking at our server and it has been trying to install Power Pack 2 since it was released and has failed everytime - either through automatic updates or manual install. Gets so far and then the installation just fails. Running own build server (I've been building computers for 10 years+) but WHS has not bene altered in anyway from original install, other than with automatic updates. Server is on a cat5e wired home network. Only other issue we have had is with recovering backups when someone has closed the folder down before a copy has finished (after that unable to open that drive on backup on that computer), but thanks to the fact we have 5 machines on the network have been able to sort that out. But this problem has my brother (who works with computers day in day out) & I (electronic engineer with network specialism) flummoxed - and my husband refuses to even try :) Anyone got any suggetsions as to why PP2 refuses to install - and should I even worry about it?

What error message do you receive when it fails and what are the version numbers in the Windows Home Server console under settings>resources?

  • No error message - just the fact it does not install (and neither does IE 8 but I am less worried by that). Literally it say failed on both then goes to the update screen saying neither installed and that is it - no error message.

    As to the version numbers:

    Windows Home Server Console: 6.0.1800.0
Windows Home Server Backup & Restore: 6.0.1800.36
Windows Home Server Drive Extender: 6.0.1800.24
Windows Home Server Remote Access: 6.0.1800.0
Windows Home Server Storage Manager: 6.0.1800.24

    Hope this helps

Have you attempted to reboot the server and run automatic updates?

  • Yes on of the first things I did was a full reboot and run automatic updates again - in fact I have done it several times with no success. My first isntinct when an update fails is to try this....

  • Hi Roz,
how much space is free on the C: drive of the server?
Can you try the following while logged in locally on your server:
In Start/Control Panel/Administrative Tools stop the service Automatic Updates.
In C:\Windows delete the folder SoftwareDistribution.
    Restart the service Automatic Updates.
Try to update via console again.

    Best greetings from Germany
