Recovery and Windows Product Key RRS feed

  • Question

  • Recently, my HDD was damaged. I took it to repair (they are microsoft certified people), and they did replace it. They asked me for a recovery disk and I told them that i did not create a recovery media disk, when i bought this computer. So they tried to help me solve the problem and they gave me one of their own recovery disks, which matches the same model of my laptop (Toshiba C660-1CV). since then, whenever i try to apply windows recovery to my laptop (in order to reinstall winsows, I do it by hitting F8 when windows restart), the product key of that newly installed windows does not match the product key that came printed on the buttom of my laptop, anymore. I imagine it now matches the one of the disk they gave me. I tried to change the product key manually by right clicking on my computer, scrolling down, but the option for 'change product key' is not available. all is there is a blue icon saying 'ask for genuine microsoft software'. however, I did try to activate my genuine windows online using microsoft website, it sais that my windows is already genuine! Moreover, i tried to install windows update, it gives me an error (error installing SP1 update). My question is this: is there a way to fix all these problems? I know that i can manually change the product key, if i downloaded some product key programs... And that i can also download windows update manually ...but i need a way for windows to do this automatically each time i apply 'windows recovery' to reinstall windows, same like it used to be when i first bought the laptop like it came from factory. i love the fact that it used to bring back my windows factory settings. it would be lovely if you could help me solvee that.
    Thanks!

You need to change the Product Key to the one on the COA sticker on the machine's case (or inside the battery compartment),  using the Change Product Key link at the bottom of the System properties page.

You may need to activate by phone.

  • MGA Diagnostic Report Required:

To properly analyze and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the diagnostic report produced by the MGADiag tool (download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )

    Once downloaded, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, after a short time, the Continue button will change to a Copy button.
Click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your post.

  • It is not possible to set the recovery to auto-install your product Key without completely re-sysprepping the system.

You can adjust your preferences in your profile to set the system to notify you be email of all responses to the thread.
