Problems with WGA

Question
-
My copy if Windows is genuine! Why does the tool keep saying it is not and stop me using my upgrade of Media player? I keep getting the black screen and a note saying is not genuine which is very annoying! The validation says that I am using a product key not valid for my region! I bought the computer with CD from the council in nottingham ages ago but have moved to Lincs - wasn't aware of them being that sensitive!
Am running XP professional with service pack 2 and this issue only arose after I had to reinstall after a very serious virus infection in which I had to literally reformat the hard drive. i cannot get any other service packs because of this irritating tool

Hello Alzamina,
Thank you for posting in the WGA Forums Slartyb2. Based on your MGA Diagnostic results you have a geographically blocked PID. A "Geographically blocked PID" is a Volume License Key that is valid, but was licensed solely to a corporation or larger enterprise/business. Blocked VLK's are Product Keys that Microsoft has received consent from the original owner to block usage of. A VL Product Key is non-transferrable to individuals. In order to resolve your non-genuine licensing issue, please visit: www.microsoft.com/genuine and click on "Validate Windows". When validation fails, click on the Get Genuine button which will provide information on how to acquire a WGA Kit.
Also I noticed Microsoft Office Professional was installed using a now blocked volume licensing key (VLK). Please visit http://www.microsoft.com/piracy and file a piracy report.
Thank you,
Stephen

Good Morning Alzamina,
I have captured a portion of your MGA Diagnostic results to review.

Windows Product ID Type: 1
Windows License Type: Volume
Windows OS version: 5.1.2600.2.00010100.2.0.pro
Please copy the last 15 digits of the product key identified within your results, "3R89F-D2KXW-VPK3J". Next please use your favorite search engine and run a search for this key. As you will note there are several hits all over the internet. VLKs are blocked by Microsoft at the request of the original product key holder for various reasons such as the product key was lost, stolen, compromised, misused, or expired. Also, MS may have blocked the key if it notices a pattern of misuse, i.e., more installations of Windows using that key than authorized.
Next the copy of Windows you received has a Volume Licensing Key or "VLK". As a rule, VL editions of Windows should not be sold to individual consumers. Businesses, schools and governments normally use VL editions for flexibility in installing many computers. Also, Volume Licenses for Windows XP is Upgrade licenses ONLY and cannot be used as the original or base license for a new computer.
More bad news. Microsoft Office Enterprise was installed with a blocked VLK as well.

Let me address your concern, "Will I lose all the information saved on my computer"? This would depend on how you or whomever prepares the system prior to reformatting. Previously you mentioned having to reformate the computer because of a virus. Did you lose anything then? A recommendation for you is start identifying files you no longer need then delete them. Next create file folders and move remaining files into them. This way all your information is sorted. Next recommendation would be to create one top level folder and then move all the new folders you just created into this top level folder. Finally if you can purchase an external hard drive and move this one top level folder containing sub-folders onto the external drive. Now you have an effective back-up which can be performed routinely. If you don't like that recommendation you can burn information onto CD or DVD ROMs. An external hard drive is quicker and provides you with a great way to maintain information. There are other ways.
Has your computer ever been turned in for repairs? There are situations which can cause Windows XP to become non-genuine. Let me give one example. Customers have taken in their systems for service along with all the software received when purchasing their system. The customer picks up the system and viola’ no problems whatsoever until they need to download an update. Suddenly their system is non-genuine. The customer's computer was not installed with their software but either a blocked Volume Licensing Key (VLK) or a Keygen’d Product Key. Also the software could work for several weeks, months, or even a year or more then suddenly become blocked.
Alzamina you mentioned purchasing Windows from excess stock at the Council. Can you clarify what you mean by the Council? Is the Council a store, individual, online business or??? Please let us know. The best guidance which I can give is to please file a piracy report by visiting http://www.microsoft.com/piracy . Also please visit http://www.howtotell.com and compare the software you purchased against the various examples of genuine and counterfeit copies available on the site. Please visit where you purchased Windows and explain the situation which you are in. Ask them to refund your monies or provide you with a Genuine version of Windows. Should this not happen then yes you will need to purchase Windows again. You should have been presented with “Get Genuine” when you failed validation. You will be able to purchase Windows at half the original cost. We understand this still costs. It is unfortunate companies or individuals take advantage of you as their customer. Hopefully I have been able to provide you with more detailed information.
Again thank you.
Stephen

ok - from your standard answer (no individual answers on here it seems) - I am going to have to lose all my data on my computer and fork out lots of money for another copy of windows, despite the fact that the copy I have is genuine and was sold to me sealed with the computer still in its box from excess stock at the Council.
To put it in a nutshell away from the cut and paste paragraph - I need to buy another copy of windows - yes? Will I lose all the information saved on my computer?Wednesday, May 20, 2009 9:46 AM -
