Backup failure - 0x80070079 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Home server has been running flawlessly for me for a couple of years now.  It's even saved my butt on a couple of occasions.  For the last 6 days, backup of my primary PC has been failing.  I've rebooted the Home Server and my PC.  The error continues.  The details say "COMException  The semaphore timeout period has expired. (Exception from HRESULT 0x80070079).  I've looked at the Event Viewer on the server and searched the web for help.  Can't get to the bottom of this one.

    Any clues or pointers?

    Thanks,

    Greg

  • Try running chkdsk /r on all the drives of the client having the problem.

  • Take a look at the errors reported. Generally they will be "soft" errors: invalid index entries, things like that. If any bad sectors were reported, however, you have a failing disk and you should plan on replacement.
