Is it necessary to have AV installed on the server?

  • Hi,
this always depends from how you would rate your risk to get infections through the LAN.
If you never login to the server and use it as desktop, the risk is already much reduced (since a web browser will not be used locally, which is nowadays the main infection source). Again, if you permanently keep your server up to date in regards of security patches.
Of course even the most careful handling cannot nullify the total risk of infections, as a virus scanner can't.
But each factor (patching, proper usage, carefulness and antimalware software) reduces the risk to be hard hit.
So it is recommended to have a WHS aware virus scanner installed on the server, but not mandatory. (And the server should have some resources like CPU power and memory to run such software.)
    Best greetings from Germany
    Olaf
