Vista Home Premium will not activate RRS feed

  • Question

  • Fixing a friends HP laptop - Hard drive had to be formatted and reinstalled but she did not have her original disks. So I re-installed using a Dell Vista Home Premium and eveything went fine until I try to activate the Windows. I have a valid key on the laptop itself that I try typing in and still get the error  The product key you enters appears does not appear to be a valid windows Vista Product key. But its directly off the laptop. Here is the diag tools info:

  • You can not use a Dell Home Premium labeled disk to install onto an HP computer.  It just won't work.
What you need are the HP restore media or partition on the computer.  Check with HP's web site to see the way to start the rebuild from the recovery partition on the computer (if it still is there) or you may have to purchase recovery media from HP if the owner does not have them.
