Cannot lock desktop icons to pre-arranged positions

  Quite regularly after a re-start/re-boot, I find all my icons rearranged to both sides of the screen in a completely haphazard way.They are all over the place as far as the categories I had them arranged in, they are not in any kind of logical grouping that might be acceptable either?Is there any way of arranging them and locking them in to position until I need to unlock and rearrange them again manually?

  I am not to tech minded, so simple answers only please,thank you.
