Sudden Validation Failure, Geographically Blocked PID RRS feed

  • Question

  • My hard drive failed once and I took my computer to the University of Pittsburgh's repair service for students, I don't remember what it was called (commuter consulting or computer consulting or something like that). They either formatted my hard drive or replaced it, I don't recall as it was some time ago. Obviously, they must have installed a new version of XP Pro. The thing is, it had always validated just fine. I've downloaded Visual Web Developer Express, WMA 11, IE 7, and many other Microsoft software from its website which requires a genuine copy of XP pro. I remember seeing the "Thank you for using genuine Microsoft software" on many occasions. Although I have not changed anything, somehow, validation suddenly failed this morning when my computer seemed to have restarted by itself although I had some programs opened. Anyway, the University of Pittsburgh computer service could not have given me a pirated copy, they are extremely strict about things like that. Also, in the Diagnostic tool, under Office, the OGA version says: failed to retrieve... (seel below), what does that mean? Please help, anyone. Thanks so much. -Dion

The university has a specific usage policy for their product key they distribute for university use. I suggest talking to the IT admins on campus regarding correct usage.

  • Do you work for the University or are you affiliated with it?

If not, you should not be using that current product key (as the one in use belongs to the University).

  • I am a student from the University. As a student, I am eligible to receive "free" software and "free" computer fixing service. The words free are in quotations because students pay about $150 per semester for computer services. Windows XP Pro and Office 2003 are just examples of the software that we are supposed to receive legally and without additional cost. The University's computer consulting service knows this and probably decided to give me a copy, it's standard procedure. Do you think the technicians used a copy and key that was already installed on another computer? Or installed a copy which are only used for the Universitiy's computers? It still surprises me though that the validation failed since I have seen the "Thank you for using genuine windows products" message often (or something like that) and since I was supposed to receive a genuine XP Pro as part of my education package which I have paid for.

    Thank you for your assistance.

  • Penn Stater here. I get the below output after a format. As Draconic had done, I had updated quite recently with no problem. Upon attempting to update today on a fresh install, I obtain the following:

    EDIT

I checked with PSU's IT and there is an issue with all of the University's keys with a particular leading 5 characters (my 5) that are being listed as invalid.  According to them they are working with MSFT to remedy the situation.
