My Windows 7 RRS feed

  • Question

  • I bought a Windows 7 Ultimate last October for me and my wife's Laptop and as soon I received the package I activated, that was fine the stamp appeard in the botton right corner of the system page.Today, I noticed in the bottom right hand corner of my wallpaper this mark 'Windows 7 Build 7600 This copy of Windows is not genuine' and in the system page. So, I really don't know what to do...

Your Key is from a not-for-resale MSDN account. You need to claim an immediate refund from the vendor - do NOT accept the offer of a new key.(all they are trying to do is to get past the 45-day claims window. or avoid you sending the evidence of their crimes to the authorities)

Please read the following stickies.... a lot of it isn't directly relevant to you, since you bought it pre-installed, but it will help in advising what to do next.

The pirates have got VERY good at this over the past few years, as the price of equipment for manufacturing the packages drops, and as factories open in less well-policed countries.

I think I know the answer...

Your Product ID line shows that you are using an MSDN product key.  Unless you are the subscriber who was issued this product key it is invalid for your use.   EBAY is a f**** website

I called to microsoft and they told me to buy a WGA £139. Can you explain me what it means, if my laptop will shut down until I buy a new key and if this WGA is a fullor an upgrade version.

The WGA Kit is a Full Retail License..... BUT!!!! it is restricted by a supplementary License to use on the machine which had the non-genuine problem. It cannot be transferred to another machine under any circumstances.

MS seems to have dropped the price - it used to be £199 for Ultimate!

Your machine is at around three years old - according to the BIOS date - and as such may be expected to last another couple of years at most, if you're a heavy user.
If you plan to upgrade the motherboard, or change the machine altogether, I would advise against using the WGA Kit, and instead purchase a Full Retail pack from a reputable dealer - you need to buy Ultimate unless you need the extra flexibility it brings, and could probably happily use Home Premium with no effective loss of functionality. Full Retail licenses can be transferred to either new motherboards, or entirely different PCs, so long as the old installation is removed.

It's your decision at the end of the day - no-one here can really know how you plan to use the system.

  • The WGA is more like an OEM license than a full retail license in that it is not transferrable to another computer.  But it gives you something legitimate to work with.

You can keep the laptop from going into a reduced functionality mode by extending the grace period.  To extend the grace period another 30 days click on Start and type 'slmgr -rearm' in the Search/Run box.

And yes, eBay is a f**** website when it comes to proprietary software.
