Validation Error? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Okay, I'm no expert with computery-things, but now this is really ticking me off. It would be great if somebody could help out. Please and thank you.

Ahem, we've had this computer for a while, all the time with windows XP (not sure how to tell if this is home or media version, pretty sure it's home though.) Then one day we started getting this annoying pop up thing saying "Validate this copy of windows" to make sure it's genuine... I have no clue what this genuine thing even is! So I go to validate it anyway and it says "This copy of windows is not genuine- you may be a victim of software counterfeiting, click finish to learn more about the error" ...Nothing happens. And then it continued to do this again and again and again. And now it's really getting annoying, I can't even open Windows Media Player anymore! So then today I went and found these forums, looked around and downloaded this reporty thing. Found one fishy thing that says "Blocked VLK" in red for validation status. NO CLUE what's going on, could use some help please! =0

  • Frustratedgirl,

Please follow these steps for assistance:

Step 1 is to run the utility at this link http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012, then click the Windows tab, click the "Copy" button, then paste the report into a response in this thread.

Step 2 is to look on the computer or with the materials you received with the computer or with your retail purchase of Windows to see if you have a Certificate of Authenticity (COA).  If you have one, tell us about the COA.  Tell us:

    1.  What edition of Windows XP is it for, Home, Pro, or Media Center, or another version of Windows?

    2.  Does it read "OEM Software" or "OEM Product" in black lettering?

    3.  Or, does it have the computer manufacturer's name in black lettering?

    4.  DO NOT post the Product Key.

Not sure what to look for?  See this page for reference:  http://www.microsoft.com/resources/howtotell/en/coa.mspx

  • Frustrated Girl,

We never received the diagnostic results that Dan recommened you to run. I am sorry to hear about the problem your currently experiencing. I can see right away what the issue is with your operating system and why it is not passing validation.  Unfortunately, the product key used to install the operating system is a Volume License Key (VLK) that has been blocked per the request of the legal VLK holder.  As a rule, VL editions of either an Operating System and/or Office should not be sold to individual consumers. Businesses, schools and governments normally use VL editions for flexibility in installing many computers.  Also, Volume Licenses for Windows XP and version of MS Office are Upgrade licenses ONLY and cannot be used as the original or base license for a new computer.

This is why you were seeing the "Software Counterfeiting" messages on your computer, because the current installation of the operating system is an unauthorized installation. In any case, please uninstall the non-genuine installation of the operating system to alleviate any complications which may arise from the non-genuine status of your system. As a customer there are options available to you for a resolution. For details on the ways to “Get Genuine”, see the web page that outlined your validation failure details or http://www.microsoft.com/genuine.  It will provide all of the possible steps which you can take.

First, if this comes as a total surprise to you, please visit the retailer where you purchased the computer and let them know your operating system  is a counterfeit copy and demand they immediately reimburse you and/or provide a Genuine Copy which was originally paid for. Please print a copy of the diagnostic report so you may show them proof for the 103 Blocked VLK statuses.  In any case, please uninstall the non-genuine installation to alleviate any complications which may arise from the non-genuine status of your software.

I am sorry to hear about your situation. Please don't hesitate re-posting if you need further assistance.
