Windows Home Server on a Windows 2003 R2 Active Directory Network / Anti-Virus software for Windows Home Server / Backing up WHS data / WHS Server comparison RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have four  questions:

    1) I am rebuilding my home network and I want to as follows: Old HP Server with Windows 2003 R2 Server (will be a primary domain controller due to AD being installed for RIS/WDS) installed for use for deploying operating system installations for Windows XP, Vista and 7 via PXE and application/drivers/utilities files / Asus TS-Mini Windows Home Server for primary data storage / media streaming to laptops/PC's and Xbox 360/PS3 / Windows Server 2003 Server R2 (Clone PC) for data duplication from Asus TS-Mini Server. Since AD is required for the Server that is going to do the operating system deployment, will my client PC's be able access the WHS server if they are on the domain?

    2) What is the best antivirus software for Windows Home Server?

    3) I want to backup the WHS via my second Windows 2003 R2 Server (which may or may not be a secondary domain controller - probably not) - what is the best way to do this so I sync the data back if I need to ever reinstall WHS on the Asus TS Mini Server / update WHS when Vail is officially released?

    4) Is there a comparison of pre-configured WHS Servers such as the HP Mediasmart and Asus TS Mini servers and their features?

    1. Domain joined clients can still access Windows Home Server, back up to Windows Home Server, etc. Windows Home Server itself can't participate in the domain, however.
    2. There is very little available. Avast has a product. FSecure also has one, I think. Clamwin will run, as will Bitdefender. Mcafee has something, but I don't believe it's available separate from an OEM server that comes with it.
    3. You copy data to/from the server shares. There is no supported (or even practical) way to back the entire server up; it would require imaging the entire server at one time while Windows Home Server itself had been quiesced and then restoring the entire image in one shot.
    4. Not that I know of, but there are a number of blogs that discuss the feature sets of the various OEM offerings.

I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)

    1. Will I still need to install the WHS client software on my laptops and desktop PC?
    2. I'll do some more looking - thank you.
    3. Should I use some sort of synchronizing software between the WHS shares and the second Windows 2003 R2 server?
    4. Any ideas regarding which blogs to look at?

  • Yes, you will need to install the client software. How else would the clients be joined to the server, without which they won't back up?

Synchronizing software: I used to use robocopy for everything. Now I use richcopy for batch ops, and synctoy for interactive replication.

Blogs: Let me Google that for you.

I think you get the idea... :)
