Which Certification should I do? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi

I'm working as a Computer Technician in an IT company having 4 years experience, I've Master's degree in Statistics with Computer diploma, I do configure/customize Desktops, Laptops, Servers/Blades, Cisco Routers and Switches. we work on windows 7 based environment.

I'd like to upgrade myself from Technician job to a better one, so can any one recommend / suggest which IT MS Certification would be better for me as I already have A+, Network+, CCNA?

    Thanks in advance

  • Perhaps the certification that would best fit what you are currently doing would be the MCITP:Enterprise Desktop Support Technician. Or maybe, if you wish to expand your work into a different area, you may consider the MCITP:Enterprise Desktop Administrator. Take a look at the links in the various tabs of this page:

    http://www.microsoft.com/learning/en/us/certification/cert-windowsclient.aspx

If you'd rather evolve into servers and networking, then you may be interested a certification such as MCITP:Enterprise Administrator (http://www.microsoft.com/learning/en/us/certification/cert-windowsserver.aspx#tab3), but note that this will require you to study a number of topics that may be different from what you mentioned that you are currently doing (such as Active Directory).

  • Skdec9,

Do you have a specific area that interests you?  How far up the ladder do you want to shoot?  You seem to want to push beyond the first line jobs...

Does your company have projects beyond normal day-to-day stuff that involve sys-admin or other areas?  You may want to volunteer for some projects that push you in a new direction or even a couple of projects to find out what best suites you.

If you are looking to work your way up the MS cert chain... Are you Windows 7 certified? MS 70-680 exam.  If not, you may want to start there - it could be an easy first step.  I thought I knew XP like the back of my hand and could work circles around others with XP...until I took the XP exam... No matter how much you think you know, there is always more to learn...especially with Microsoft.

Additionally, you might want to look at the next steps in Server 2008, you will see the Windows 7 certification is part of the bigger picture.

First look to MCTS.  Then, as you grow, look to the MCITP.  The categories listed as you where you are or what you want to do.  Hope this helps.

  • Thanks a lot Alberto! ya these both certifications were in mind, but I'm not sure whether this will help me to earn a better job than my current one.

    Thanks any way
