  • Question

  • I got this message shortly after uninstalling panda cloud anti virus and replacing it with another.   Thinking the new virus program was the problem I quickly uninstalled it.  I also installed Miscrosoft security essentials the same day.   I've had this computer over 8 months without any issues.  I installed an OEM version of Windows 7 from Fry's electronics from whom i also bought my computer to custom build.    It validated ok and i have updates as recently as Dec 15th.  That was the last time I was able to get auto and manual updates from microsoft.   Please help.

  • Hmm, that is a problem.

sppsvc (also known as sppsvc.exe) is a file that is in every copy of Windows 7 and slui.exe is a file that is in every copy of Vista and Windows 7 (and possibly in Windows XP as well).

The fact that you are getting errors indicating that these file are missing (or in the wrong folder) suggested a larger issue with Windows, not just the licensing systems.

There are some things that you can try to repair the damage

    a. System Scan. The scan will look for bad Windows files and will attempt to repair them, if possible. (Note: even if a file is found bad, Windows is sometime not able to repair it)

    1) Click the Start Button
    2) Type: cmd.exe
    3) Right-click the cmd.exe file and select 'Run as Administrator'
    4) In the CMD window, type: sfc /scannow
    5) Reboot and see if that resolves the issue.

    b. Repairing Windows using System Restore:

    1) Click the Start button
    2) In the Start Search field, type: System Restore and hit “Enter”
    3) Select "Choose Different Restore Point", Put a check in the box that says "Show restore points older than 5 days", select the restore point that corresponds to the date Before you first noticed the issue.
    4) Click the "Next" button.
    5) Reboot and see if that resolves the issue.

If neither of these sets of steps resolves the issue, my only other suggestions would be either contact Microsoft assisted support at one of the below URLs or (as a last resort) reinstall Windows.

It looks like your Licensing Store has become corrupted
Try the below steps to recreate the Store and its data.

    1) Click Start button.
    2) Type: CMD.exe into the 'Search programs and files' field
    3) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select 'Run as Administrator'
    4) Type: net stop sppsvc   (It may ask you if you are sure, select yes)
Note: the Software Protection survive may not be running, this is ok.
    5) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareProtectionPlatform
    6) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar
    7) Type: cd %windir%\system32
    8) Type: net start sppsvc
    9) Type: slui.exe
    10) After a couple of seconds Windows Activation dialog will appear. It's most likely that Activation will occur automatically but you may be asked to re-enter your product key and/or to reactivate.

Once complete, reboot, then run MGADiag again, and post the new report.

  • Thanks for Help Noel but I ran into a couple of issues:

    1.  I do not appear to have sppsvc...I could not stop nor start that program

    2.  when running slui.exe (under cmd.exe as admin) I get a pop up message that an error occured and a request to contact Microsoft.  When I click on error details it says that "the system could not find the path specified"

    3.  Also, I read somewhere that you could right click control panel, choose properties and activate that way...so i tried that...but it did not give me a choice to activate.   I did see the following text under "Window Activation" just in case it helps:

    "Status:  Not available"

    "Product ID:  Not Available:

Hopefully this helps you help me :)
