I reinstalled my vista ultimate on the same machine after reformating harddirve. Now windows says I am a potential victim of counterfeit software....

    Question

  • Hi,

I think the title is pretty much all I know about the problem.  I can't use windows update now and it is very frustrating not to have my machine available for work at this point.  I'd appreciate your help.

    Thanks

  • Hi,

Thanks for the response the other day.  I've uninstalled my Symantec and windows has stopped complaining about me being a potential counterfeit software victim.  However, despite having activated my windows, I still can't get the updates to install.  I've installed the hotfix but it doesn't seem to have made a difference.  Anything I might do at this point other than to reinstall windows again?

    Thanks

After the reboot, open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following command

    NETSH WINSOCK RESET

You'll be advised to reboot - do so.

    then post another MGADiag report.

STart by trying the offline install of Service Pack 1.

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Learn-how-to-install-Windows-Vista-Service-Pack-1-SP1

YOu'll need the 32-bit installer from here  http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=30

If that fails, try using the CheckSUR tool

Please run the CheckSUR tool from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821

(you'll need to look in the details for Method 2)

Then zip the CheckSUR.log and upload it to your public SkyDrive so I can take a look - post
    a link in your reply.

The tool can take anywhere from 5 mins to a couple of hours to run (or 'Install') depending on how much it has to do, and may exit silently - it may appear to freeze for most of that time, but be patient.
