This indicates that the key has been blocked for some reason.  Try reactivating by phone.

Click Start, type "slui.exe 4" and follow the instructions.  Do not respond to any of the automated prompts and you will be transferred to a live agent.  The agent can give you the general reason for the blockage and, depending on the reason, may be able to help you get reactivated.

  • I have checked this key and it is Blocked and the reason showing for this bock is: "SBC COA Emplacement".

I have not seen this reason before so I am not exactly sure what it means, but it suggests that the Certificate of Authenticity (i.e. COA) and the product Key were replaced with a new CoA and key, for some reason.

I recommend following Colin's suggestion and contact an Activation agent.

    Thank you,

  • I followed your instructions and was told that the product key I provided is blocked but the agent could not tell me why.  He advised me to submit a Counterfeit Software Report at https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/howtotell/cfr/report.aspx. I have completed the report and now must mail it to Microsoft PID Center with

    1. A printed copy of the online counterfeit report
    2. The counterfeit Windows operating system CD or DVD you purchased or received with your computer along with any additional software packaging
    3. The 5x5 product key, if this was requested when submitting your counterfeit report
    4. The original purchase receipt of the software or computer, including the date of purchase and the name and address of the seller

The site notes that "Items submitted to Microsoft will not be returned. After we receive the information, if you have inadvertently purchased Microsoft Office or Windows software that is counterfeit, we will send you a complimentary replacement."

Does this seem like the right action?  I am afraid I will lose my legitimate, genuine copy of the software.

  • After mailing the required items to Microsoft PID Center, I received the following in an email:

"Your counterfeit report submission has been reviewed and accepted. A complimentary software replacement kit will be shipped to the address you provided when submitting your counterfeit report. Please allow 4-6 weeks for delivery of your complimentary kit."

9 days later I received my "Get Genuine Online Kit" in the mail.  I had the option of re-installing the OS or changing the product key of my current installation.  I chose the latter option.  It worked and all is well again.

Thank you Colin and Darin for your support!
