Remote WHS Access to Shares Only? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Is it possible to create a user account on WHS that only has access to the selected shared folders (as defined by the user properties) and not to the “Computers” tab on the home page?  I would like the “Computers” tab grayed out and inaccessible to selected user accounts.  I’ve looked in help and searched the forum but I don’t see how I can do this.  Thanks.

  • No, it's not possible. A user who is allowed remote access at all can see both the Shared Folder and Computers tab. The thinking is probably that you still need a valid user name and password to actually log in, so there's no real security problem.

Personally, I want to be able to set access at the level of individual shares, i.e. some shares may be "read only" on the remote access site, or a user may only have access to a particular share locally, not using remote access. And of course, I want to be able to restrict access to the computers tab.

  • That was my conclusion but I wanted a second opinion just to make sure I didn't miss something.

  • Well, you could always have them browse to it with Firefox or any browser other than IE - when the site detects that you aren't using IE, it hides the Computers tab and options. ^_-
