It is indeed not a genuine install. It is a blocked Volume License version. This means that it was originally license for use in a large scale environment with many installs but that the Product Key was leaked out. Once it is detected as being leaked, the key is blocked by Microsoft.
At any rate, support for Windows XP is coming to an end in April, so you would want to upgrade your system anyway. I would suggest Windows 7, however you will probably need to upgrade the hardware as well.
