Windows 7 no longer genuine.

Question
-
I built a desktop for my boys to use and purchased Windows 7 Professional via eBay. It has worked well for 8-9 months or so but now I get a notification stating "This copy of Windows is not genuine". I have read several other posts where people were sold copies (MSDN versions I believe) which were not intended for sale. I was hoping you could tell me if that is the issue for me. I was hoping I was doing things legitimately but I fear I have purchased an illegal copy. Thanks for your assistance. Attached are the results from the MGA Diagnostic tool:

The "221" in your PID is going be a bearer of bad news. I'm not one of the experts here but after a few dozen times one gets used to seeing the fraud yet again. Darin, Noel, or Carey will confirm but I think you've been had. You're in good company. These counterfeits coming out of China are stunningly genuine looking. But sadly they are not. Pursue a refund while you still can. I did. Don't trust the integrity of the dvds. There is no guarantee that they are clean of rootkits and such. This is an unbelievable experience.

The pirates have got VERY good at this over the past few years, as the price of equipment for manufacturing the packages drops, and as factories open in less well-policed countries.

Thanks for taking the time to verify what I had suspected. I will attempt to contact the seller. Since I purchased this close to a year ago, I'm not very optimistic. I probably look into purchasing Windows 7 through Newegg or other reputable store. Again, thanks for your help.Sunday, February 6, 2011 4:15 AM

Just use the MS Store. It is a little more expensive but you can rest easy about having everything right. You should still report the seller to Amazon. You should still be able to retrieve purchasing information and identify the partner.
Amazon itself should be safe. I assume NewEgg is safe but I have heard some surprising places selling counterfeits (probably inadvertently). One poster insisted Staples got him.

Any big store is reputable enough, and can be considerably cheaper than the MS Store .In the UK currently, Ultimate Retail can be had for £175 from reputable etailers - while the WGA Kit from MS is £199, and the full MS Store price is £230.Just ensure that if you use Amazon, you are buying direct from Amazon itself, and not from some fly-by-night in the Amazon MarketPlace!
