"Unexpected error" installer WHS connector software on XP Home sp3 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Have tried several fixes I found in the forum, but to no avail.

When I start the install process, I get MOST of the way through.  It connects, asks for the computer ID, wake-up for backup preference, etc.  Then is installs for about 5 minutes and gives me a "Unexpected error."

Afterword, it I go to my Win7 or Vista machine, I can see that the computer is listed in the dashboard but it is not online.  It identifies the machine with the XP PC name, not the description I used during the connector install.  If I try to install again, it tells me a computer with this name is already installed and asks if I want to erase the old one.  Still gives the same error.

I have tried several things in various combinations:

    - Made sure the description in the install matches the XP computer name.

    - Removed the computer from the server (using the dashboard from the win 7 machine)

    - Turned off the windows and antivirus firewalls.  Tried several combinations of off & on here.  Did not try to manually enter the exceptions, since it didn't work with the firewalls turned off.

    - Ran services.msc to make sure SSDP was started.  It was listed as started.

Any ideas--or have a missed something already in the forum?
