Windows XP. Half of the product key. RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello all. I want to format my 3 year old laptop. Problem is the product key label on the bottom was half ripped off by one of my children. I have the last 9 characters. I have downloaded a couple of key finders but the key doesnt match as the laptop was bought through a scheme at work and has the product key of the company who supplied it. I have contacted them but they dont keep a record of the product keys supplied with the laptop. Will Microsoft be able to help me retrieve my product key ? Any help is greatly appreciated as i dont have £75 for a new licence.

  • Hello markd359,

If the laptop is from a major manufacturer, it's likely it came with Recovery or Reinstallation disc(s).  Generally speaking, if you use these to run a full recovery or clean installation, it is not necessary to input a product key.  Please check at the support site for your laptop to make sure that this is true in your case.

Please run this utility and copy/paste the results into a reply:  http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012
