WHS2011 mempry reporting issue RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have built a small home server with WHS2011, 2.4GHz core 2 6Gb DDR2 OCZ120Gb SSD boot drive, and 2 500Gb HDD. The bios reports 6Gb of memory but when I go in to system properties in WHS2011 it report 6Gb installed 3.44Gb usable? I was under the impression that this OS supported 8Gb of memory? Is there a fix for this?

    Thanks Chris

  • Then I don't know! WHS2011 is 64-bit but is limited to using 8GB of RAM. I have two systems using 6GB and 8GB respectively without having to make any changes to the installation - neither regularly use much more than 3.5GB.

  • No fundamental reason why WHS2011 should not see 8GB by default.

  • So why does mine show only 3.44Gb usable when all 6Gb should be? If I remove 2 1Gb sticks and leave 4Gb it says all 4Gb is usable?

    Thanks Chris.

  • The point I was making was that it's not a fundamental WHS2011 issue. I would start by looking at your motherboard, particularly to see if you are using the latest BIOS.

  • Latest bios it reports all 4 memory sticks which are 2 sets of matched pairs 2x 2Gb and 2x1Gb, I've changed the the order of the sticks, no change. The boot screen shows 6Gb. I've run memtest no errors found?

I'm stumped, I saw something similar when my son built his i7 extreme system and had the wrong OS installed, he has 32Gb of ram and had to upgrade the OS to use it all. That also saw all the memory but would only use 16Gb?

    Thanks Chris
