Media Player 12 in Windows 8.1, "stopped working" at each pause

Question
-
I am watching an educational video, and each time I pause to take notes, I receive the message the the player has "stopped working" and it closes when I acknowledge. I have tried to run troubleshooting but there has been no improvement. What can I do so that this can be fixed?
At one point I also received this message when trying to fix the problem by redownloading.
Windows Media Player is not compatible with your system. You are running Windows 8.1 64-bit. Although Windows Media Player will not run on your system, you can download Windows Media Player for other operating systems.
I am not very tech savvy, could you please explain what I need to do to make them compatible. The player actually works well as long as I do not attempt to pause it.
