Moderator Abusing the System? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Where do we report a moderator that that appears to be abusing the recognition system?  I came across XXX and he seems to be marking ALL of his posts as the answer and even when the originator unmarks them he just re-marks a different one.  Is this be monitored at all?

  • Most of the activity I see in the profile you linked is "contributed helpful post". I cannot mark my own replies helpful, even in a forum I moderate. Someone else must have marked the replies helpful. As for marking you own replies as answers, a moderator can do this, but I'm fairly certains this does not count toward any achievements. It might contribute points, however (I cannot tell because I never mark my own replies as an answer). I know some moderators do mark their own replies, but in the cases I've seen there is no other reply that could be an answer. As for marking your own reply as a "Proposed Answer", I think this is often necessary. I use this to prompt the question asker. It also assists other moderators if the asker never returns and they want to mark an answer.

  • Obviously when it is the correct answer and the originator has been given time to confirm that it is very appropriate to mark it as answered.

I spot searched the last couple of months of replies and I actually did find 1 reply that someone else besides the moderator mark his answer as the answer, there are probably more but that is all I saw.  The only reason this even bothered me was that on the first thread I came across when I needed a solution, his answer was marked as the answer by him and the correct answer was left unmarked (at least correct for my problem).

Wow though, you were right.  Every single answer I looked at was also marked as helpful at least once.

If the powers that be believe that this activity is normal then so be it.

I really don't care but just thought I would try to better the community and thought that someone with the correct access could run a simple report to identify if it seemed abusive.

moderation guidelines you can find here: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/1034.moderating-microsoft-forums.aspx

i believe the intended way to complain is either using the feedback option on the bottom of the page or the "report as abuse"

  • So, say, as a moderator I unmarked an answer (I did recently when I believed provided answer was not really good) - I guess the person who provided it kept 5 points. More frequent situation - moderator marked and OP unmarked - -5 points.

  • Per this thread:

    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/Profile/thread/4545c4c3-103e-45d4-82f5-22f5fde33b01

Ed Price states that when an answer is unmarked, whatever points were awarded when it was marked answer are reversed. So when the person that asked the question marks a reply as an answer, a person gets 15 points. When a moderator later unmarks the reply, the person loses the same 15 points. The FAQ does not make this clear.
