Question size limitation is really short !

  First time I posted a question, the system told me I should not exceed 255 characters ! Then I reduced a lot and found 255 is very very short ! Then I discovered that most posts where longer than that. Finally I tried again, with a post longer than 255 chars, and after mentionning again the limit I should not go over, the system finally accepted it !
  
  I think 255 is a lot too short, but anyway, the system does not seem to work the way it should !
  
  What did I miss ?
