WHS Backup Fails

Question
-
I purchased an external USB drive to backup the shares on my Aspire WHS. I added the new drive as a backup drivem and succesfully backed up the WHS shares. After the backup, I removed the drive from the backup pool, and physically removed the drive with no problems.
However, a week later I attempted a 2nd backup, and it failed silently after several attempts. The drive was successfully added to the backup pool, and I was able to see my older backup. Once the new backup was started, the progress bar showed that the backup was underway, but after an hour or so the backup status window disappeared, and the backup was halted with no error indicated. I tried several times, and each backup resulted in a silent failure.Any ideas why this is happening? Is there somewhere I should look for errors?
Thanks.
Mark

How much space is there on the drive? Enough for new files, shares, etc., plus any files that have changed since the last backup? Have you run chkdsk on the backup drive?
I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)- Marked as answer by Jonas Svensson -FST- Tuesday, February 9, 2010 1:18 AM

The backup drive is 1.5 Tb. I had ~800 Gb used from the first backup, and the 2nd backup would have required ~1.2 Tb. I was under the assumption that the WHS backup performed an incremental backup. Is this not the case? I know it incrementally backs up the PCs on the LAN, but what about the shared folders on the WHS? Or, does the WHS backup simply copy everything?Anyway, after the 2nd backup failed I deleted the original backup, so there was absolutely enough room on the drive.
Yes, I ran chkdsk, and it reported no problems.Thursday, January 21, 2010 9:10 PM
