Question about synctoy behavior during drive failure

  I've been using synctoy 2.1 for the last year to do local backups for my computers on a shared external USB drive.  Recently I lost a lot of files from the My Documents folder on 1 computer, and the external drive had failed at the same time.  Is it possible that the two are connected?  If the drive failed at the same time that a synchronization was in progress for that folder, would it view the right folder as empty and then update the My Docs folder to empty?  I was able to recover the deleted files on the PC, so it's not a critical question, I'd just like to know what happened.  Thanks for anyone's time.
