When you send the crash report in, it gets added to other reports and analyzed for common causes of crashes. If they are found to be caused by a Windows component or driver, they are added to the list for patching or fixing. You won't get a response from Microsoft on a crash report.
OneCare also uses crash report data to analyze problems and this data is used to update the program. Once again, you won't be contacted for sending the data in, but it is very helpful in tracking down the reasons for these problems and is much appreciated.
