Re: Office XP Validation Problem RRS feed

  • Hi Stephen Holm,

Unfortunately, this did not work for me.

    Office XP Professional / Win2k

When trying to update office, I get the WGA prompt.  Running WGA failed with "need to activate".  Although product had been activated for years and still indicated product was activated.

Found this thread in this forum.  Renamed C:\WIN95\Profiles\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Office\Data\data.dat by appended ".old".  Word then prompted for activation on start.  Activated Word, appeared successful.  (machine

was originally a DOS machine and updated with Win3.1 / Win 95 Final Release MSDK / Win 98 / Win2k)

OGA still says, "need to activate"

Renamed office data.dat.old to .older, renamed data.dat to  .old , did the same for OGA data.dat .

Went through activation again but through office activation under the start button, OGA still indicates "need to activate".

At one time I did go through the registry and removed all instances of my old company name and acronym for both office and win2k.  This would have been done about a year ago, after the original activation, but long before this attempt to update.

    tnx, Daniel R. Rhodes

  • Daniel,

Thank you very much for providing the diag results. Your running Win 2K. This is why you are receiving unsupported OS as taken from the diag report.

    Diagnostic Report (1.7.0012.0):
    -----------------------------------------
    WGA Data-->
    Validation Status: Unsupported OS

You are running Office XP Pro and a stand alone copy of Microsoft Publisher 2002.  FIrst I want you to activate publisher then Office XP.  I understand the inconvenience you are currently experiencing surrounding Office activation. In turn I would like to provide the following steps to try and resolve the issue. Please follow the steps to attempt resolving this issue.  Open My Computer located on your desktop

    1.   Go to: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Office\Data\

NOTE:  The application data file may be hidden. Use the Tools drop down menu and follow:  Folder Options->View->Hidden Files and Folders->Show Hidden Files and Folders to show the folder. Please re-hide the files once you have completed all the steps.

    2. Right click the data.dat file, then click “Delete”.(Also you can rename the file and move it from the folder)
    3. This data.dat file is for Office (not OGA)
    4. Once the file has been deleted, open an Office application such as MS Word and “ACTIVATE” it.
    5. If product activation was successful try the Office Genuine Advantage (OGA). Please launch the following link and begin the OGA process again: (this is the OGA part; Office Genuine Advantage):  http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/office/Validate.aspx?displaylang=eng

  • Daniel,

First, I want you to run a diagnostic test and post the results for us to analyze the results. I understand the inconvenience you are currently experiencing and would like to provide you with some self-help options we have made available for our customers to address the issue you are currently experiencing. Please follow the steps outlined below as it could either resolve your issue or, if need be, provide us with additional information to determine the cause of this issue.

    1. Ensure you log onto the computer experiencing the issue with “Administrator” rights.
    2. Next we would like to confirm that you are running the most current version of the Genuine Advantage control on your computer. In order to do this please follow the below link and choose the “Validate Office” option.

    http://www.microsoft.com/genuine

If the above steps did not resolve your issue lets continue with the steps below.

I would like to provide some of the self-help options we have made available for our customers to address these issues. If you could please follow the steps outlined below the diagnostics Web Site will attempt to resolve the validation errors you are experiencing with Office.
    http://www.microsoft.com/Genuine/diag/RunDiags.aspx?displayLang=en

Next follow the on-screen prompts to resolve the issue if any of the checks at the above site fail. You can do this by choosing the “Resolve Now” button if it appears. If, after attempting to resolve the issue as per the instructions on the above site fails, please refer to the link below and run the MGA Diagnostics tool:

    http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012

You will be prompted to either “Run” or “Save” the tool. Choose to “Run” the tool and follow the on-screen prompts. You will receive an “Internet Explorer-Security Warning” dialog box for the “Windows Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Tool”; you must choose to “Run” this tool when prompted.

Once you are presented with the Diagnostics tool choose “Continue” to run the diagnostic report. If the “RESOLVE” button is available after running the diagnostics, please click “RESOLVE” to allow the diagnostic tool to attempt a repair.

    1. After running the MGA Diagnostic tool, click on the “Windows” tab and then click on “Copy”.
    2. Please return to this post and “Paste” the results here for additional review.

If the issue still has not been resolved could you please provide us with the following information?

    Thank you

  • Hi Stephen Holm,

I followed your steps.  But the final results seemed odd to me.

    1. No problem

    2. Same result, "Microsoft Office XP Professional:
Validation Incomplete: Office Must Be Activated"

The next step, RunDiags, told me I needed to "Show pictures", even though pictures have never been a problem.  The "Resolve" button gave me directions on how to enable pictures, but they were selected as enabled.

The next step, linkid=52012 with the appended results.  The Resolve button is greyed out.  The "Validation Status: Unsupported OS", doesn't make sense to me.  It's an OEM copy of Win2k pro which passes all WGA tests (except the new office one).

Oddly enough, after running the diagnostic report, I tried the "try again" button after the "Resolve show pictures" and everything looked fine.  However I chose the option to try "Office Validation" once again, but got the same error as before, "Microsoft Office XP Professional:
Validation Incomplete: Office Must Be Activated".

I hope this points to a solution.  While I understand that microsoft wishes to prevent piracy, the steps should not make life harder for people to secure their machines.  It's dangerous enough out there in internet space.

    Thanks,

    Daniel R. Rhodes

  • Hi Stephen Holm,

Unfortunately, there are still activation errors.

I should have figured out the reason for the "unsupported OS", it's a reason I'm becoming less satisfied with microsoft.

Pubisher 2002 was included in my office XP professional as a "bonus".  The cardboard sleeve does have printed on it that publisher 2002 is included.

But indeed, publisher 2002 needed activation due to "major changes in the system".  I never use it except to view the files of others and even then rarely, so I can remove it if that turns out to be easiest.

After activating publisher 2002, office still said it was "already activated".  I tried the OGA validation, which failed with "office has not been activated".

I then deleted the office data.dat, activated publisher 2002 first, then activated office XP.  I did the RunDiags which passed for everything.  I did the diagnostic report, double checked all the office products to make certain they all said they were activated and started to write a reply.  My internet explorer choked before I finished, so after a reboot, I then tried the delete data.dat, activate pubisher, activate office, run validation.  It still failed due to "office needs to be activated".  The diagnostic report appended here is after rebooting.

    tnx, Daniel R. Rhodes
