No option for server reinstallation RRS feed

  • Question

  • I'm having trouble with my home server and have decided to do a server reinstallation.  The problem, is that I'm not getting an option for reinstallation.  Only new install.  During the setup process I can see all six of my drives, including the one labeled SYS on the load additional drivers screen, so I'm not sure what the issue is.  Any information you can provide will help!

    Thanks!

  • You may have this problem if you have a mix of IDE and SATA drives, or if your system drive is not the "boot" drive (per the BIOS, usually the master on IDE channel 0 or the drive on the lowest SATA channel actually used).

Some users have been successful with a reinstallation in this situation by disconnecting all but their system drive, until after the first or second reboot, so you could try that, but that depends on the BIOS finding the correct boot drive afterward. I would recommend copying your data off your drives before you make the attempt; I can't tell you what might go wrong, but I'm sure there are plenty of opportunities for data loss if something does.

I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)

  • I should also mention that my media is pre PP1.  Not sure if that matters for a reinstallation.

  • You are right, I do have a mixture of drives.  I'll see what I can figure out.

  • I forgot to post my resolution on this issue.  Yes, Ken's suggestion worked great.  I unhooked the power on all of my drives except for the system drive and was then able to get the option for server reinstallation.  After the first reboot during the installation I turned off the server and hooked the power back up to the rest of my drives.  Reinstallation continued normally and my server was fully restored within an hour or so.  Thanks Ken!
