Windows 7 Update RRS feed

  • Question

  • I just replaced a defective hard drive and used the recovery discs I made from the original hard drive. I restored the new HD to factory-out of box state. I can't get windows update to run. I also could'nt install Turbo Tax. Any thoughts or help would be appreciated.

  • The installation is showing as genuine - with no indications of problems.

Please attempt validation at www.microsoft.com/genuine/validate - what happens.

If it fails, please post a new MGADiag report.

If it passes (and you still can't update)....

Please run a full CHKDSK and SFC scan....

Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories

Right-click on the Command Prompt entry

Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

    At the Command prompt, type

    CHKDSK C: /R

    and hit the Enter key.

You will be told that the drive is locked,

and the CHKDSK will run at he next boot - hit the Y key, press Enter, and then reboot.

The CHKDSK will take a few hours depending on the size of the drive, so be patient!

After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally (possibly after a second auto-reboot) -

    then run the SFC.

SFC -System File Checker - Instructions

Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories

Right-click on the Command Prompt entry

Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

    At the Command prompt, type

    SFC /SCANNOW

    and hit the Enter key

Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.

Copy the CBS.log file created (C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log) to your desktop (you can't manipulate it directly) and then compress the copy and upload it to your SkyDrive Public folder (http://skydrive.live.com ) and post a link to it so that I can take a look.

Post a new MGADiag report with details of any error messages encountered.

  • To properly analyze and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the diagnostic report produced by the MGADiag tool (download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )

    Once downloaded, run the tool.

Click on the Continue button, after a short time, the Continue button will change to a Copy button.

Click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your post. (please do not edit the report.)

Please state the version and edition of windows from your COA. do not state the product key from the COA.

Windows 7 Home Premium OA. I Just replaced my defective HD (which was less than 2 years old) and used the original recovery discs to load the new disc. Windows loads and I can use Live Mail, IE. Quicken and printer drivers loaded and appear to work fine. I tried to install Turbo Tax but got an error message that I didn't write down. I can't run Windows Update. The message I get says the service isn't running. Toshiba wants $159.95 to correct on a one year service plan. Before I started this hole process, I called their tech support an was told all I needed to do was to use the recovery discs. No mention that wasn't all that was required. I had to remove the "links" before I could submit.

  • Missed the "W" on the hole process but maybe it is a good description because I feel like I'm in a hole and can't get out.
