incorrect product key message using OEM version of windows XP RRS feed

  • Question

  • I purchased a new OEM version of Windows XP pro off eBay for a home build PC.  It came sealed with a COA and appears to be genuine. When I try to enter the product key the message I get is: "incorrect product key."

Can you tell me what is going on?  Thanks.

Windows Product ID: 76487-024-5236883-22192    This would read "OEM" if it was really an OEM license

    Windows Product ID Type: 5

Windows License Type: Retail     This would read "COA OEM" if it was really an OEM license.

    Windows OS version: 5.1.2600.2.00010100.3.0.pro

IMO you received a counterfeit XP Pro OEM licensing kit.  The kit really contains a counterfeit CD that is installing a retail license for XP Pro.

  • Hello mlusk246,

Does the CD have "For distribution with a new PC only.  For product support, contact the manufacturer of the PC." or words to that effect printed in the upper left quadrant of the hologram label?

  • Yes it does.

The seller complied with "Microsoft's Distribution Agreement for System Builders states that OEM software must be distributed with either a fully assembled computer system or a non peripheral computer hardware component. In accordance with Microsoft, and eBay's policy for listing an OEM item, your purchase will include an as is non working hard drive, motherboard or other qualifying component of our choice."

After reading about how to detect counterfeit COA or a CD I looked at what I had and I'd say it's genuine. Can you tell me what is going on?  Thanks.
