Windows Vista Home Premium "Copy of windows is not genuine" RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have Windows Vista Home Premium

I've had my laptop for almost 2 years now and just yesterday I started my computer and a message box said "Windows Vista Home Premium product key you typed is invalid for activation."

My screen is black and says Windows Vista (TM) Build 6002 This copy of Windows is not genuine

I typed the product key in from the sticker on the back of my computer and then it gave me an error message saying "The following error occurred while trying to use the product key:
    Code:0xC004F050
Description: Unable to find detailed description
The facility code is : ITF (0x04)
    Facility error: 0xF050 (61520L)"

Here's the diag, also it's weird that the last three sets of numbers shown for the product key do not match the label on the bottom of my computer...

I've never seen that combination of errors before - so I may be well off-base with the following, but it should at least clarify the situation....
Your Diagnostic Report suggests that Vista's Licensing Store may be corrupt or its data may be messed up in some way.  Please try the below steps to recreate the Store with the correct data.

    1) Open an Internet Browser window.
    2) Type: %windir%\system32 into the browser address bar.
    3) Find the file CMD.exe
    4) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select 'Run as Administrator'
    5) Type: net stop slsvc  (it may ask you if you are sure, select yes)
    6) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareLicensing
    7) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar
    8) Type: cd %windir%\system32
    9) Type: net start slsvc
    10) Type: cscript slmgr.vbs -rilc (It may take a long time for this to complete, please be patient)
    11) Restart your computer twice.
    12) You may be required to enter the Product Key and/or Activate.

    Windows Product ID Type: 3

Windows License Type: OEM System Builder

    Windows OS version: 6.0.6002.2.00010300.2.0.003

Interesting  -it's come back as a System Builder Key?
There's still one error message present - which hopefully will be removed by going to the Validation site http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/validate  and passing the validation there.
