Does WHS do file versioning (Shadow Copy)? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I'm considering WHS and the Seagate Mirra personal Server - both of which do apparently the same thing.

The Mirra does file versioning - up to 8 version backups of a file.  I've looked here and on the WHS site and can't seem to get a clear answer:

Does WHS do file versioning (or the Server 2003 style Shadow Copy)?

    Thanks!

  • Yes it does, at least for WHS defined shares. Please note that implementation of the shadow copies in WHS a bit bugged at the moment:

In addition, WHS documentation advises not enable shadow copies on WHS volumes manually

Yes, it does.  However, there is currently a bug with it (which occurs after rebooting the server).  Check here and here for details...

  • Ahhh, so it does do Shadow Copy - AND - Shadow Copy stops working.  So it does AND doesn't do file versioning... very Zen.
