Windows update error 80070426 RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have had huge problems updating Vista recently, no update will seem to install throught Windows Update and I have only managed to install one update manually; all others fail. The error code for all the updates is 80070426.

I have also been having problems with vista hangs usually whist playing fullscreen games (graphics drivers are up to date), but also whilst doing medial tasks like browsing the net.

Extensive virus and malware scans find no signs of infection.

I have been advised to run WGA Diag and post the results here, so here they are:

[Thanks for any help in advance!]

  • Hi joshqatar,

It sounds like you still have full control of your Vista. This is good, but please know, that given the File Mismatch information in your Diagnostic Report, your Vista may go into Reduced Functionality Mode at any time. This is because Vista will, most likely, perceive these tampered files as an attack in an attempt to bypass antipiracy security.

In reallity these Mismatched files are (most likely) not bad. Vista uses a encrypted list (called the System Catalog) of all it's system file's Signatur Hashs. If the signature hash, of a system file, doesn't match what is on this list, Vista knows the file have been modfied in some way. But in your case, I believe this List, itself, has become corrupted in some way. So since the list is bad, Vista is unable to match any file's Hash with what is in the list and reports all the systems files as mismatched.

You could try a system scan. It will look for bad system files and attempt to repair them. I have never tried it with an issue such as this, so I have no idea if it could help or not. (it shouldn't hurt)

    To run the scan:

    1) login to Vista in normal mode
    2) Click start and in the 'Start Search" field, type: cmd
    3) the top result, of the search, should be a program called CMD
    4) Right-Click the file and select 'Run as administrator'
    5) In the CMD windows, type: sfc /scannow
    6) Once done, it should tell you what it has done.
    7) Run the Diagnostic Report again and see if the Mismatch files are gone.

Other then this, I don't know how to fix this issue without reinstalling.  I highly recommend contacting Vista support at http://support.microsoft.com and see if they have any alternatives for you.

Very sorry I couldn't be more help,
    Darin MS

I suggest you re-install Windows a lot of the Windows Vista files were modified, not allowing you to use updates. Try to backup, re-install, and then un-backup. Activate by telephone.

  • Unfortunately you have confirmed what I was expecting to have to do. I am however in the middle of completing some university coursework that requires the CAD/ rendering packages I have installed on the computer. I simple don't have the time for a complete vista + supporting software reinstall back to a state where I could continue to do the uni work. This will all be finishing in May so I do not have too long to go, but I need my system to have a basic stability until then.

With this in mind is there any way I can temporarily stabilise the system (updates not vital as SP2 ins't due until the end of March as far as I know...) so that I can get through the next few months work and perform the system reinstall once it is completed?

    Cheers,
    Josh

  • Hi Darin,

Good advice, I had actually already run the sfc tool in an elevated cmd! It seems to fix some errors but says something along the lines of: some currupt files could not be fixed... etc. I Shall continue to run this each day when I boot (only takes 5 mins to scan) and hope that that is enough to tide me over until May. Fingers crossed! Then I can do the reinstall and get my computer working the way I like it; problem free! (although computers never are 100% problem free are they?!)

    Thanks again for the help,
    Josh
