Incorrect Product Key RRS feed

  • Question

  • I just purchased a Laptop from Fry's.  The product key is located underneath the laptop.  It keeps on coming up as incorrect when I entered it.  What is going on?  I read the darn thing a dozen times over and I know I'm reading it correctly.  PLEASE HELP.  I even made sure I didn't have my Caps lock on and didn't enter any dashes (but let the computer do it by itself).

  • SamSKA,

The laptop you purchased should have already been validated. Can you share why you need to input the key again?

When did you purchase the laptop? Please let us know exactly what problems you are experiencing such as any error codes, statements explaining problems, has the laptop recently been serviced. Should you need further assistance please run the diagnostic test and post your results back in this thread. We will analyze your situation and may provide you with a possible resolve. Guidance is below.

Download and run the utility at this link http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 , then click the Windows tab, Copy to Clipboard, then paste the report into a New Post on this Forum.

Step 2 is tell us about the COA. Tell us:

    1. What edition of Windows XP is it for, Home, Pro, or Media Center?
    2. Does it read "OEM Software" or "OEM Product" in black lettering?
    3. Or, does it have the computer manufacturer's name in black lettering?
    4. DO NOT post the Product Key.
    5. Please also provide a short description of the issue you are experiencing.

NOTE: The data collected with the Genuine Diagnostics Tool does NOT contain any information that can personally identify you and can be fully reviewed, by you, before being posted.
