WGA Validation check says Valid... RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi! KB905474 update froze my computer. I re-started and got the message that my Windows XP was not Genuine. I went to the WGA Validation and ran diag. It said my copy WAS genuine.

So, now each time I reboot, I am recieving the message that the copy I have is not genuine, even though it is.

I have tried to delete the .dll file suggested on other threads in this forum but my computer says it can't delete it because it is being used by another program. I have closed all programs and tried again, but to no avail.

What now? Thanks in advance for any help!!!

  • Figured it out!   Will share in case it happens to anyone else.

I was trying to follow the directions to get rid of the LegitCheckControl.dll file so I could re-validate after the KB905474 update froze my computer. I couldn't delete it because another program was using it. I wasn't sure what program.

I ended up turning off my "Automatic Updates" in the Security Center and was then able to delete the file. I turned the "Automatic Updates back on, re-validated and then re-booted. Upon re-boot, the auto updates re-installed and everything is running great.

No more "Not a Genuine Copy"!!!!! Thank goodness!
