The value of links

  A lot is written about the value of backlinks to your site to increase site rank, but i frequently check competitor sites for their links using www.alexa.com, and it seems that some of the top ranking sites have literally 2 or 3 links!! How do they get a top spot on the results page? Our site www.thefunkychef.co.uk, currently has 8 backlinks according to MSN, but still rank low on other search engines (msn still doesn't index us at all, but i want to get ready for the day it does!!!
