Vista Ultimate failing to do software updates and SLsvc.exe deleted by chkdsk

Question
-
I have Vista Ultimate, 32 bit, and attempted to run Windows Update but it failed with an unknown error code 80070426.
So I rebooted, only to be contronted by a "hard disk" error message prior to the boot completion, at which time CHKDSK began verifying and deleting various files, including SLsvc.exe.
After this stopped it completed the boot normally, but I find that it still cannot do any updates - same error message occurs.
I see others have had similar problems before but can't find any solutions that apply to my situation. Prior to this problem arising everything was working. Last successful update was a month ago.

Since CHKDSK has found problems, your HD may b failing - so back up your data now, and then run the HD manufacturer's Test utility over the disk to check its health.Once you've done that, try running the System File Checker to repair problems with missing files - Windows is complaining that the file slsvc.exe is missing. (Start>Run, type SFC /SCANNOW and hit the Enter key)
