User consequences re inability to include folders in backup in 2.0 RRS feed

  • Question

  •

I am stunned that I can no longer include folders in backups. How am I supposed to backup to an external file C:\Programs\Quicken\Quicken Data\Backup, which is not in Microsoft's preapproved list? This new limitation does not seem sane, really.

  • As far as I know, OneCare will backup Quicken files from within the \Program Files folder by default. Have you checked the list of what is backed up?

  • How can C:\Program Files\Quicken\Quicken Data\Backup be backed up to external media using Onecare when Onecare no longer allows folders to be included in its preconceived list?

  • The native Quicken backup for Onecare is C:\Quicken\Backup. I believe that the automatic Quicken backup is C:\Program Files\Quicken\Quicken Data\Backup. In any case, the rationale for Microsoft's dictating folder selection for backup is beyond strange--but typical of MS too in an unfortunate way.

  • Along these same lines, I now read that this version, in its automatic backup scheme, does not backup *.exe files and a number of other types presumably backed up by previous versions of the software. But aren't the executable files often some of the most valuable files? (Yes, and increasingly often not distributed on external media.) I was certainly dismayed at this news.

However, did you check to see if the Quicken backup is backed up in OneCare backup?

I didn't originally agree with the change in backup logic, and sometimes still have my doubts, but the theory is - backup by type. All locations except \Windows and \Program Files are scanned for files matching the type. Exclude any other folders or files you wish. To have an option to add a folder is redundant - except that prior to v2, this allowed the filter by type to be ignored for the added folder. This back door was closed in v2.

If any files you want to backup are on the excluded/disallowed list, simply zip them and make sure they are stored within \My Documents or another valid folder and they will be backed up.

Prior to v2, these were only backed up if one used the back door "include" folder option which ignored the file types and included all files within that folder. Say you had a folder - c:\incoming and saved all downloads to this folder. If your OneCare backup plan was to only backup Mail and Pictures, then your added C:\incoming, everything in the added folder was backed up along with Mail and Pictures from any valid scanned folder on the PC.
