WHS will not boot

Question
-
My WHS keeps rebooting and I am unable to boot in safe mode or using the last know good configuration.
What do I need to do to get this problem resolved without reinstalling everything? I have lots of files I cannot afford to lose.
TIA,

All of the drives are connected including the disk that was failing. That happens to be the primary boot disk and is 750GB.
Are you saying that I need to disconnect that one?
ForestRanchSteve said:Hopefully there is no data on it at all. WHS stores data on that drive last. However, if there is data on that one, you will want to connect it to a client PC and copy the files over to the server after you complete the Server Reinstallation process. Any real data on that drive will be in a hidden folder called DE.What about all the data that is on it?

You can perform a server reinstallation. You will lose any customizations you may have made, such as add-ins, software installed or configuration changes made outside the console, etc. but your data (and normally your backups) will be preserved. To perform a server reinstallation: Insert the WHS installation DVD and reboot your server. If asked, choose to boot from the DVD. On the hardware discovery screen, make sure all your hard drives are connected and visible. If they are, when you're asked what kind of installation you want to perform, you should be given the option of a server reinstallation, as well as a new installation. If one or more drives isn't visible, then you'll have to supply drivers for setup to succeed with a server reinstallation. If no drives are visible without supplying drivers, then you will need to supply drivers at the hardware detection screen, and then again just after the server reboots into text mode setup (at the "Press F6" prompt). If all your drives are visible, and you aren't given the option of a server reinstallation, STOP. Get back to us, and we can help with alternative methods of recovering your data and getting WHS reinstalled. If you have an OEM product such as an HP MediaSmart Server, you should consult the documentation you received with it, as procedures for performing a server recovery (the OEM equivalent of server reinstallation) will vary.

Thanks for the reply, Ken. I did what you suggested and it appears that the file structure is intact, but I cannot access the shares directly. It tells me that I do not have permissions. I am logged in as administrator and went as far as setting the permissions on one of the folders to everyone with full access and it still does not let me access them.
It also looks like the cause of the problems is a disk drive going bad. I did a chkdsk and it found some bad sectors. I have ordered two new 1TB hard drives and they should be here today. Question is what is the best way to install the new drives. Since the bad sectors are on my c: (sys) and d:(data) I will need to remove that one.
TIA,
Steve

First thing I would do (in case you didn't already do it) is chkdsk /r on both the C and D partitions. (Without the /r switch, it won't attempt to fix anything, just notify you that there are bad sectors). As for the new drives, use one of them to replace the failing primary drive and follow Ken's instructions before regarding Server Reinstallation. Once the re-installation is complete (which can take quite a while and appear to be frozen, but don't worry, it's not) and you have installed all of the critical updates on your server (keep checking for updates until it says there are no updates), then connect the second drive and add it to the storage pool.

Thanks Kariya21.
I did do a chkdsk/f not a /r. I will try that now.
I am confused as to the installation of the primary drive. I had problems when I upgraded the last time from one size drive to another. I had attemped to clone the drive which was the boot drive to the new larger drive. When I brought WHS up, none of my data was there.
Here's what I would like to do.
1) Get the system back up and running somewhat correctly. (which I am almost there)
2) Create a new system (boot) drive from the old one which is smaller. I am not at all sure how to go about this.
3) Install the second drive as a mirror image of the system drive (RAID 1) so that if this happens again, I am not stuck and do not have to reinstall everything.
Thanks
Steve

Steve,
Assuming you have the server up and running:
To install a replacement system drive is just a matter of plugging in the new drive, and then booting from the server DVD. You should be presented with the options of a new install, and a re-install. Selecting the re-install will just install the operating system and rebuild all the pointers etc.
You will need to re-install any Add-Ins and customisations, plus re-add your Clients, but you will then have a re-built server with a larger system drive. I've done this quite a number of times now and is straightforward and relatively quick; the only slow part was the last portion while it was re-building all the data pointers.
There is no straightforward way to achieve your point 3. The vast majority of Raid-type systems - unless you go for a specialised hardware raid - need to install on both drives at the same time; not one drive and then copy to another. You are also limiting yourself in future, as most software Raid's require identical drives, whereas the WHS method allows any available drive to be used.
The above method of doing a re-install is the recommended way of recovering a server and is a straightforward method, anything else is totally unsupported. Also, as you've found, doing a drive clone from one drive to another may not necessarily result in a working system.

Okay, I have the new drive and went to reinstall WHS. It does see the new drive in the installation setup, but does not give me the option to reinstall. I formatted the drive ntfs with no drive letter under WHS disk management and it still does not give me the option to reinstall.
What am I doing wrong?
Thanks,
Steve

Are all of your drives connected, with the new one in place of the old (failed) system disk?

All of the drives are connected including the disk that was failing. That happens to be the primary boot disk and is 750GB.
Are you saying that I need to disconnect that one? What about all the data that is on it?
Thanks

Thanks to all of you, I have my WHS back up and running. Kariya21, you were right it rebuilt all of the data without the need of the original system drive.
I appreciate all of the help.
Thanks
