      Notes for North America:
    1. US and Canadian Money 2005 and Essentials users — as well as other US and usually Canadian users — can use Money Plus Deluxe Sunset if they have to reinstall at some point. See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2118008 for information.
    2. Some US users of Money 98 ... Money 2003 may have to use an additional step of first installing a verson of US Money 2004 or 2005 to perform a file conversion before installing Money Plus Sunset. Here is a link to a minimally functional version of US Money 2005 (filename webinst.exe) that can be used for conversions: http://download.microsoft.com/download/D/B/7/DB72D4E0-FBD1-4B76-BFA0-1FF20F6AEC8D/M12USWEB.exe    The downloaded file is named  webinst.exe

    Money 2005 French - QFE3
Self-contained French Money 2005 file including all available patches. Replaces all MS Money French 2005 installation disks.

    Note for all versions

It is suggested that all Money users keep a good copy of the installation file, even if the need is not immediate. It will be needed if you reinstall Money in the future. Those links can change, so do a search if you don't find the file you need. Since we don't know how long these files will be available, it is best to keep a copy of your appropriate installation file in a safe place.

    Regional versions

Money data files are in a different format for each region. The correct regional version of Money must be used or the data file will not open.

It is possible to convert from one region to another only by exporting data as loose qif and importing to the new regional version of Money. See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/304254 and http://support.microsoft.com/kb/178830 .

All Money versions will run  under 32-bit Windows

Old versions (Money 2000 and earlier) may include 16-bit code that can run only under 32-bit Windows (XP, Vista, 7,  8 and probably 10).

There are continuing changes to the way Windows works. There is no certainty that newer 32-bit Windows will continue to run Money well or at all.

    64-bit Windows

The latest available versions of Money, downloadable below, run under Windows versions up to Windows 8. We hope they work with Windows 10.

There are continuing changes to the way Windows works. There is no certainty that newer 64-bit Windows will continue to run Money well or at all.

Many have complete success running older versions of Money on 64-bit Windows. Some versions may have a problem with some features, some will not have a problem

    Internet Explorer

Money depends on Internet Explorer for some features. Development of Money stopped some years ago, so some features in Money do not work well or at all with the latest versions of Internet Explorer.

    Money version downloads

The latest versions are free for anyone to use, but are not supported by Microsoft. The download links below are maintained by this forum's moderators and might become unusable at any time.

Remember to keep a secure copy of the downloaded installation file for when you need to re-install. Your data will be inaccessible if you cannot reinstall Money.

This forum is the only support available.

http://moneymvps.org/ has a useful info including downloads for the files.

  • Hi,

I've just picked up on this thread and have downloaded the UK - QFE2 installation file. I've done this because I'm currently using 2004 (v12.0) on an XP machine and am concerned how it will work when I upgrade to W7(64bit) which I believe the QFE2 version does. Will the M2005 - QFE2 programme read my old .mny files written by M2004?

    Saturday, December 3, 2011 1:15 PM
  • The System Requirements on the download page say that it is supported on Windows 7, Vista and XP. When Microsoft say Windows 7 and Vista are supported they mean both 32 and 64-bit versions: if it was bitness specific that would be stated.

Money versions for the same region will import and upgrade data files from older versions (apart from some recent US versions which require an intermediate stage to upgrade from very old versions). The old data file is copied and saved with an Mxx suffix and a new data file created.

Money 2005 UK - QFE2 imported my UK Money 2004 with no problems. UK Money 2004 worked for me on 64-bit Windows 7, except only that sound effects stopped working some time after installation.

  • See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Money. Money 2000 was the last localised version for Italy.

There will never be an official way to update Italian Money 2000 to a later version. You can export your data as loose qif and import it to Sunset if you want. Sunset may not display its menus in Italian.

Money has not been developed since 2009 and posters in this forum are finding some problems with Money Sunset in Windows 8.

Long term, the only way to be sure of running any version of Money is to run it in a virtual machine with a version of Windows known not to have problems with that version of Money.

If you do not have an available version of Windows, you can try running Money under Wine in a version of Linux, either natively or in a virtual machine. See http://www.winehq.org/ and http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=application&iId=79.

  • Many thanks.

It has taken about 2 years ( most spent trying get help from MS or their links ) but now , PRESTO. I tried a couple of less important files first , then the main one when they were OK.

It has not made backups yet but I shall find a way to do that once all 20 or so files have been transferred to a new safe place - and old ones can be sent into the ether !

  • Thank you for posting all this information. I just rebuilt my systems and discovered, as other will if they haven't already, you can no longer activated your copy of Money. I had a really old version of Money that came with a computer or something and liked it so much decided to purchase the new version in late 2008. A little disheartening to have spent almost $80 only to see Microsoft giving the software away two years later. :(

  • Hi Dominic,

Do you know if the uk fix will allow importing of classes? Currently all imports fine except for my family members analysis. Which makes it useless to me.

  • I would suggest that in the top post you add a link to the repaired mnyob99.dll file for US Money Sunset users as well as the recommendation that the file be stored on external media along with the installation file.

  • I'm having trouble downloading the Money 2005 UK - QFE2 file. Internet explorer is saying it "couldn't be downloaded" and leaves a 28Mb .partial file in the download folder.
    Saturday, January 12, 2013 3:44 PM
  • problem solved - my download folder is redirected to a network share. I downloaded to my C drive and it worked.

I think it had trouble running the security scan over the network when it tries to rename the file from .partial to .exe

  • Hi to all,

Does anyone know what version is needed for Italy?

    Thanks in advance,

    Fabio

    Tuesday, January 14, 2014 11:46 AM
  • See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Money .

The last Italian version was Money 2000 (Money 8). This will include 16-bit code, so will not run on any 64-bit version of Windows.

  • Thanks,

but is not possible using "US Money Plus Home and Business Sunset" with Italy personalization of menù and other?

Another question: if I use "US Money Plus Home and Business Sunset" and import qif file of Italian Bank an error is present: all value are imported with comma shifted (the value is multiplaied for 100 (example correct value is € 5,80 but import is € 580,00 )

    Fabio

    Tuesday, January 14, 2014 12:54 PM
  • Any version can be used. If you had an Italian (or other regional) version you would need to export your data as loose qif and import it.

Set your base currency as the Euro in the program options.

  • Salve Fabio,

ho cambiato PC, questo nuovo ha windows 8. Precedentemente usavo Money 2000, purtroppo ho capito che in italiano non esiste più. Sei riuscito a scaricare/usare  "US Money Plus Home and Business Sunset"? Se sì, da dove lo hai scaricato? Hai risolto i problemi che avevi riscontrato? Grazie per una risposta

  • To switch from the Italian Money to Money Plus Sunset, you would need to do a QIF export of each account on your old computer, and then Import, all at once, into Money Plus Sunset. There is a method to follow if you want to do that.

Per passare dai soldi italiani a Money Plus Sunset, dovrete fare un export QIF di ogni account sul tuo vecchio computer e quindi importare, tutti in una volta, nel tramonto, più soldi. C'è un metodo da seguire se si desidera farlo.

  • Thank you so much for providing the Money 2005 UK - QFE2 download. Having spent many hours trying to install  a MS Money .MBF ( Back up file) on a new computer using the original MS Money Disk, I nearly gave up. I was getting error message after error message and I nearly purchased a new accounts package.

Luckily I found this forum with its downloads. It took minutes to download Money 2005 UK - QFE2 and my problems were solved.

I do like using MS Money and thanks to this forum I can continue to do so, on my new Windows 8.1 machine!

    Thanks again

  • Hi, Cal. Do you know where can I find the Money 97 (version 5.x) to download?
    Monday, December 15, 2014 4:57 PM
  • I use the Money 2005 UK version (which you have downloaded), currently on 64-bit Windows 7.  I am just about to get a Windows 8.1 laptop - is there anything else I need to find/download to be able to go on using MS Money 2005 UK?

    All assistance gratefully received.

    Sunday, January 25, 2015 11:17 PM
  • For reference, I have been using MS Money for many years (version 3.0 if I recall correctly). As when Windows 8 arrived, the dawn of Windows 10 was also giving me some concern as to compatibility.

I have registered for the insider program and have a beta version of Windows 10 installed on a virtual machine.

I can successfully report that after downloading the setup file Money 2005 UK - QFE2 from the above link, I ran the file and it set up with no problems, hiccups, or any adjustment whatsoever (follow the on screen instructions). I loaded up one of my existing back up files to ensure that it functions and it looks fine. As this is only a Win 10 beta version, I do not intend to do any extensive testing but I am now relaxed that I will be able to continue using MS Money for many years to come.

For the record, I experienced the same compatibility when using Windows 8 (and then 8.1) back in 2012 - I do not think there should be too many concerns for users moving to this new OS (famous last words may be).

If, for any reason this should fail when Win 10 is eventually released and the compatibility is not there as I was expecting, I was going to create a virtual machine running XP

https://www.virtualbox.org is freely available as an open source programme to create a virtual machine that is not that tricky to master.

Fortunately, that is not going to be necessary. Thank you MS

  • When you use this version do your stock prices update automatically?  I also am using 2005 UK - QFE2, and I lost the ability to update stock prices in July 2013.

Any wisdom/advice to offer?  All assistance gratefully received.

    Thursday, July 9, 2015 10:54 PM
  • Microsoft discontinued stock updates in 2013.  There are alternatives:

    https://code.google.com/p/hle-ofx-quotes/

    https://sites.google.com/site/pocketsense/home/msmoneyfixp1/ofx-automation

    https://gaiersoftware.com/Money

The first two are free but require a fair amount of setup.  The last one is $10 but is a lot less work.

  • Thanks very much for this.  I am currently exploring the Gaier Software option.

I have now hit another problem.  My Money file says that I am not online; I know that I am.  I am using MS Money 2005 UK from the QFEexe download.  Without being online I am unable to remove the Save to MSN Money option, to which I am now indifferent, and additionally remove the password protection over my file.  It also means that I cannot select update stock prices as an online option.

Does anyone know how to solve this?  With thanks in advance.

    Friday, July 10, 2015 9:48 AM
  • First one-- you can do nothing about this.

Second one -- you cannot remove links, even if they go to non-working places

Third -- you cannot remove your Passport/LiveID from 2005 UK file. You could do QIF export and then import to a new file, but there is some disadvantage. On the plus side, you would have a very clean file.

The Gaier software can be invoked from a batch file. A batch file can be invoked by the Windows scheduler. It has switches/controls that include letting you specify which Money file the quotes go to -- even if it was not the most recently used file. The quotes can be downloaded to your Money file, even if Money is closed. There is a more significant setup for the UK user in that the translation table would usually require more tweaking. The tweaking is not bad if there are not a lot of different securities. For experimenting, you could have the Gaier software download to a different copy of your Money file so that you could try that plus HLEquotes on different files.

PocketSense is mainly for downloading statements from your broker and credit cards. And that is a wonderful accomplishment. The quotes often come along as a bonus via your broker. However sine Colin is in the UK, where they pretty much don't use OFX or QFX, then PocketSense would not be useful to him.

  • Just to save you time, here is the fix. It has been tested and works.

MS Money (MoneyDlxSunset) has worked with following registry change.

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Internet Explorer]
    "Version"="9.11.10240.0"  (originaly: 9.11.10240.16384)

    Thanks, Tim

  • Completed the upgrade to Win10 with the slimmest of hopes that my older version of Money might work even tho it said it was not compatible.  Well, Microsoft was right.  So I downloaded the sunset version from this thread .... it installs, but when I open it, I get a message to install IE6.  When I try to do that, I get another error message.  Should this work directly from the download, or is there more cajoling that I have to do to get it to work?

Second question, it says older versions might work in the 32 bit version of Win10.  Is there a way to open a 32bit version of windows within windows 10 they way you could in the high end version of Windows 7?  thanks.

    Wednesday, July 29, 2015 5:38 PM
  • If you read the message immediately preceding yours, you will see the solution to the IE6 issue.

  • Just "upgraded" to Windows 10

When I tried to run Money 2005 it told me it needed IE 6 to run and asked to re-install IE 6

Tried all the compatibility permutations in the compatibility wizard but got the same error message every time

I have over 15 years of data in my .mny files ( I upgraded from Money 99 to Money 05)

Would appreciate help on how to get the required files to get my Money 2005 running again.

BTW I previously tried the sunset version but it couldn't read the 2005 version .mny files

    Thanks in Advance

  • See Windows 10 Compatibility with Microsoft Money . This applies to 64-bit Windows 10 versions.

If you are running 32-bit Windows 10, the key to modify is HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer.

It is not known which other programs, if any, will be affected by this change.

  • Microsoft Money does not work on with Windows 10 as Internet Explorer is not included in 10 but has been changed to Microsoft Edge.
    Monday, August 3, 2015 6:23 PM
  • Please don't confuse this issue even more!  Money does work on Windows 10 with the appropriate registry change plus, is some cases, an update to mnyob99.dll. And the IE code needed to run Money is still included in Windows 10.  The Edge browser is now the default but if you poke around you can still find and run IE11 in Windows 10.

  • Did you install Money 2005 from a disk?  If so, that is your problem.  Go to:

    https://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/479281b2-90f9-42ca-85f7-644fc6e1e5c3/download-microsoft-money-installation-files-solve-activation-and-some-other-errors?forum=money

i.e. the first post in this thread, and download the appropriate version of Money for your region.   Then uninstall your current version of Money 2005 and install the downloaded version.

If you are in the UK, that will be Money 2005 UK and it will work fine.  If you are in the US and downloaded US Money Deluxe Sunset, you will need to make an additional change As detailed in:

    https://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/d28d6921-1f01-430f-b33e-f5a3ec47077b/important-patch-for-money-plus-maybe-20062007-mnyob99dll?forum=money

    Thanks

I tried and got the same message. I found the Money 2005 UK download at http://moneymvps.org/downloads/patches.aspx#Money2005 The file link is http://moneymvps.org/downloads/files/2005/Money2005-UK-QFE2.exe

I checked that the downloaded Money2005-UK-QFE2.exe matched the Money2005-UK- QFE2.exe.exe expected characteristics. That guarantees the files are identical.
File Size: 28917528 bytes (27.58 MB)

        MD5: F8D8CEE3049F5411B660E456D1B69DEC
        SHA-1: 0FB64C04E1589366BAB5316F7EFBB7D2C44133AF

I use the fciv utility from Microsoft to check the MD5 and SHA-1. The command is

      fciv Money2005-UK-QFE2.exe   -both

DominicP has point us to a copy. I did keep hash data so that I could check a copy to see if it was genuine:

    >fciv -both Money2005-IntlEngl-QFE2.exe.exe

  • Thank you for this Cal Learner!  Converted 2002 UK successfully (took a long time, appears to hang-just leave it to go!)

Now able to export as xml files.

  • Thank you and thank you again - beside myself at the thought of not being able to continue using Money (a devotee through each update since '98) when setting up my latest desktop (Win10).  Tried more unsuccessful approaches than I care to mention, however the  Money 2005 International English QFE2 link (July 28, 2011) seems to have worked for me albeit with an interrupted (and resumed) download. No issues with picking up and running with the most current data file - all good.  Have copied the installation file as suggested to avoid future frustrations.  Much appreciated.
